Save Money on Baby Gear

Babies grow so rapidly I buying his swing, walker, exersaucer and other high priced items that he will only use for about 1-3 mo. at a thrift store. I always check things over before I buy it to make sure there isn't anything wrong with it that could harm my baby. When ever I bring anything home from a thrift store I always clean it extremely well with some sort of antibacterial soap. This way my baby has what he needs to learn and grow and I haven't paid a lot for something he'll only use for a few months. -- Amber from NV

Huge strollers are a pain - get a nice "umbrella" type that has a basket and lays down for baby.  They run about $40 at Babies R Us.  -- Alicia from MI

Check your local newspaper for baby items, some things you must get new like a car seat and a mattress, but we got 2 changing tables and a crib for under $150.00. That leaves lots of money left over for toys:)  Check tag sales for baby items.  Most are in great condition. -- Jen from MA

There is a ton of baby stuff at yard sales for cheap. I have borrowed items such as a playpen from friends or family when they were done using it for their first child but didn't have another child to use it yet. -- Sharon from OH

Consignment shops that specialize in kid stuff are great places to find typically expensive gear: high chairs, strollers, toddler beds, toys such as exe-saucers, play gyms, etc. Yard sales are probably even cheaper.

But always buy a car seat new or from someone you know (they can vouch whether the seat's ever been in a car accident) and always check for recalls. -- Jill from VA

Car seats, swings, baby bath tubs, pumpkin seats, baby bouncers and walkers, etc., can all be bought for great prices as used items.  Be sure you're aware of any safety recalls so you don't buy something that has been recalled, but generally, I've had great luck getting baby stuff this way.  -- Susabelle from MO

A car seat cover is a must have ! It saves them from throw up and food all over them ...and in the event of an accident while riding, you whip it off and they still have a clean car seat underneath it all.  Make sure your diaper bag is washable. You won't believe how many can't be thrown in the washer! -- Michelle from TX
