I know some of the older children would grumble and complain about this one, but what about delaying school shopping? Here, it's still warm through Sept, so children can still wear their summer clothing to school.
So I say, you wait until early October to shop for school clothing! That's when the fall stuff goes on clearance and all of the holiday stuff (halloween, etc.) enters the store. You can save alot of money that way!
Plus, the school supplies at Target and other stores will be going on clearance as well because they too, need to make room in their seasonal section.
Again, no school age children yet, but I bought most of my daughter's 24 month, fall/winter clothing last year. I have already begun to work on next summer. If you can't afford to shop a year in advance (it can stretch the budget a times), then wait a month or so, to cut your savings in half!

That's a great idea and actually one I've already discussed w/my DD and she was all for it!
We are buying a new outfit for the first day of school, then waiting a few weeks to see what her 'crowd' is wearing and what she'd really like for the fall.

This is pretty much what we do - each boy gets new sneaks, one pair of shorts and one shirt to start school with. They have plenty that still fits from June when school ended. Then I comb the clearance racks for more stuff in a few months.

I do that too. They get a new outfit for the first day, and sneakers need to be replaced, but they wear shorts until early October.

Yep! That's a great idea too! Plus, for my daughter, I shop at stores like The Children's Place. During any given season, all of their clothing coordinates so you can mix and match the outfits. Well right now, most of their summer stuff that is still left (I checked out the outlet..they have racks!), is like $3.99! So you can basically go through their summer clothing, see what's in really good shape, then if there is a shirt that looks worn or has stains from summer play...or shorts for that matter...just replace them. I'm only talking about spending $20 and replacing a few key items that may have been ruined over the summer.
My daughter is 18 months and play in our yard almost everyday. Plus she is ALWAYS spilling things all over herself. If she was in school, it would be really nice to hit up TCP outlet, replace a few things, then be good clothing-wise until late Sept.

That is a good idea unless you have uniforms. I do stock up when the school supplies go in clearance for the following year.

Yes, that's a great idea. My dd wears a uniform to school and I usually get what she needs at the used uniform sale her school has in the summer. They changed the uniforms this year, though, so the many of the used things are no good for this year. Since I can get plain polo shirts at places like target or academy and have the school shield put on them myself, I decided to start her with a couple of shirts and wait for the uniforms to go on clearance. (last year they cleared them out for $1.98 by the end of sept!!) I figure I'll stock up then, maybe even a size or two ahead, and have a the school shields put on them as I need to. Uniform pants, shorts, etc will also be on clearance and this year I guess I need to stock up on those too. Much better to do it cheaper!!!
Here in Texas, they clear out the fall stuff before it ever even gets cold. DD doesn't really need anything, but ds does. I'll have to get his wardrobe around mid-october, when they are moving everything to make room for holiday items.

The Children's Place also sells clothing for uniforms. I looked on their site and some of the tights and head bands are on sale already. I'd bet that if you keep checking back, through Sept. most of that stuff will go on sale as well! Then you can stock up for next year! Plus, it is also hard to know when your child is going to hit a growth spurt in the middle of the year, so it might help to get something the next size up on clearance, just in case.
