He qualified for the one in May too and is stoked to go. He tried to get my hubby to start training for one but with him being deployed a lot it was too hard for him to commit to. He did, however, complete the Marine Corps Marathon in DC in 2003 and wants to do another one!

What is your favorite event? The swim, the run or the bike?

Hi Brad,

Kim says Hi too.

What advice do you have for someone who doesn't like to run, has run in one 5k in his life (and almost got beat by a lady pushing a stroller), and is being pressured by his wife and brother-in-law to run the race again on the 4th of July. Can biking work for training for a race?

ok

Let's talk about clothing. There was a question regarding what type of clothing will help prevent friction rubs. There are many manufacturers out there that make a moisture wicking material that will make friction rub a thing of the past. My favorite is capilene clothing by Patagonia. Nike also makes Dri-Fit clothing with the same properties. Just stay away from cotton.

Christy, to answer your question, my favorite portion is the bike. As a former football, basketball, and baseball player, I don't have a runner or swimmer's build. However, I can go pretty fast on a bike.

Scott, Yes, biking can help you stay in front of the stroller ladies. Biking builds you leg muscles and can be a great way to cross train for a running event. So, you will be participating this 4th of July?

I like your advice Christy.

Brad - I am probably going to run. I have a feeling the family peer pressure to run will be too much.

Thanks.

Let's get into the training aspect.

First, find a race and sign up. Your training plan will depend upon what distance race you and going to participate in and what type of condition you are currently in.

Scott I know what type of condition you are currently in, so you better start training now.

Next, set a goal. If it your first race, a good goal is to finish. If you have run a particular race before, you may want to beat your previous performance.
