DH has decided to get healthy and I ran WW by him and he said "ok let's give it a shot!". I've seen they have WW for men now and have a lot of exercises, tips and support on their website geared toward men. At first I figured I could just google what DH's point allowance per day was, but this morning I found contradicting answers (one listing of weight ranges for points said he got 30 per day, but another site with a questionnaire gave me a total of 40). I can find great recipes online, but the one thing I'm suddenly realizing is that I want him to have the accessibility to great exercises (and the activity point calculator) and a support group of men going through the same thing he is. And I can't give that specifically to him on my own. Is that alone worth joining WW online?

It just depends on his personality, I guess. I did WW after both my babies were born and the only reason it worked for me was that I was determined to lose each week at the weigh ins. The accountability of stepping on that scale in front of someone else who was going to write my weight down in that little booklet kept me on track. If I had done it on my own, I wouldn't have been nearly as diligent.

The only way I finally lost the last 10 pounds with each child was by counting calories and exercising. I wrote down my calories (still do). I knew plenty about nutrition and didn't need WW anymore. I think if your dh is going to do something online, he could just use a site like sparkpeople to track all his info and get ideas. And it is FREE.

From my experience, the meetings work a lot better than online. The trick is finding a meeting that works for you. We have about 5 men in our meeting that come consistently. One has lost about 80 pounds. But, for the most part the members are women.

Of course, every person is different. But, I agree with Maggie that the meetings are better accountability.

I too did WW and lost 31lbs. It is a great program and was gung ho and going to the meetings, then I tried to do it on my own and just could not do it - i needed the accountability from the meetings.
I agree with Maggie that I needed that weekly weigh in to keep me on track.

In some locations they offer the monthly pass program - you go to the meetings and track things online.

I use sparkpeople.com to log all my food & exercise intake. If I don't log my food, I find I "fall off" again!.

Good luck!

I tried WW Online and totally bombed; went to meetings and I'm doing awesome. (Halfway to my 10% goal in 8 weeks!!) I found that it was too easy to slack off and cheat when it was only me and the computer. I find that my weekly weigh in is the only way to keep myself accountable. I find that hearing "good job this week" is a huge motivator.

I am doing WW online and I am down 35lbs and just have 20lbs left. DH is doing it as well and he has lost 15lbs. It is harder for him because of work. But we are both determined. I am not a big meeting person. I think you just need to decide what kind of personality you have. I am not a big meeting person, losing weight is enough motivation for me. I do enjoy the structure that WW offers. Some people need the meetings. It is a personal decision.

I (along with a bunch of my friends) do WW. Some of us are trying to lose and some are maintaining. Either way, we have found MUCH greater success with going to meetings/being weighed in. Many times we just weigh in and leave when we are in a time crunch. Congratulations on the start! Has DH seen the doc yet so that you guys can establish some goals? I am so excited to hear about his progress.

He was a brave boy and went to the diagnostic center yesterday to have blood drawn for a panel of tests. (cholesterol, etc) I need to call the doctor tomorrow (once he gets next week's work schedule) to set up an appointment for him to go in next week and start the process. We'll find out what his doctor medically approves for an exercise regiment, as well as seeing what his physical limitations are (so he doesn't hurt himself while trying to exercise) and what he can/should and can't/shouldn't do.

I told him I was proud of him for going through with step 1 (being that he's petrified of needles) and taking control of his health. I'm also googling WW recipes and will change some things around when I do my shopping on Friday (right now we're living off the pantry, which isn't very health conscience).

Thank you Maggie -- I checked out sparkpeople this morning and so far it's EXACTLY what we've been looking for! I'll keep sifting through the information, but I think that should work just fine and be the solution to the exercises and man-to-man support I was searching for.
