There is a sci-fi-fantasy book by Robert McCammon called "Swan Song" that scared the living daylights out of me. It is about the end of the world brought on from a nuclear disaster and the creatures that evolve in the aftermath. I have no idea why it was so scary. I distinctly remember one of the humans developed a hard shell that encased her completely then she cracked out of it as a different creature. Maybe it was the idea of being so claustraphobicly enclosed that got to me. Anyway, the description of the nuclear explosion was pretty terrifying as well. It is the one book that made me have a hard time falling asleep because I was so scared.

I'll have to read some of the other ones that were recommended now.

The Stand by Stephen King. Only because the main part of the book, where everyone is dying from some odd lab-escaped bacteria is so possibly real. And Pet Semetary, too, because we all wish our animals could come back to life, but I never thought of what they'd be like.

In Cold Blood, too. That was so scary, and even more so because it was real.

Also, Amityville Horror...never saw the movie..that just ruins the images in my head.
OMG!! I read Salem's Lot years ago and couldn't sleep for I can't even remeber how many nights b/c I kept picturing Danny Glick floating outside my window!!!

That was the scariest book I have ever read!

Windy.."Nathaniel" was my First John Saul book I ever read...loved it and became a fan of his writing the day I opened that book.
