My ds is reading Salem's Lot by Stephen King as an elective book choice in 9th grade. I read that as an adult and was SCARED TO DEATH!!! I made the mistake of always saying how much that book scared me, so he wanted to read it. I think it's too scary, but he said the teacher said it was fine.

So what's the scariest book you've ever read??

I'd have to agree..Salem's Lot. You know, after reading it 20-something years ago, I still won't look out a window at night (especially in my bedroom) for fear there might be a vampire there..waiting to be invited in! Crazy, huh?! I think your imagination is more vivid than any movie they can make!
Also, Amityville Horror...never saw the movie..that just ruins the images in my head.

Definitely Salem's Lot. I don't read scary books at all anymore, but I used to all the time and that one was the only one that kept me up at night.

I read a lot of True Crime books, and normally they don't scare me. I do remember one book that really creeped me out, it was called "The Crimson Stain" it was about an Amish man who killed his wife in front of their children, only he gutted her like an animal and stacked all her organs next to her body. Even the photos of him he had such a crazed look on his face, it just gave you chills.

What is the name of that book?

I wonder if it is the same murder that took place close to Me years Ago ( 10 or 12?)

The Amish man murdered then "disemboweled" his wife.
It was a Shocking event-

But now I know That they are just like Us - so I Could see them Committing Crime or any other Bad thing we non Amish folk do.

But I would love to read that Book !

Oh and I agree - Salem's lot and Pet Semetary are Terrifying.
I am also Scared Of the book Jays Journal - I read that one when I was 13 - and I sent it out out to goodwill - Cause I was so Scared of it.

Not Much scares me - but those ones are freaky.

I have never read Salem's Lot, but I am going to have to now. I don't do scary...movies, TV, books. I tend to skip them altogether, but I do like Stephen King. I think the scariest book I've read was The Tommyknockers, by King. Kind of timid...show I don't really do scary much. Misery was pretty good too.

I don't read scary books. it would probably be something more sad scary than scary scary. If that makes sense.

The Crimson Stain by Jim Fisher. I think you can find it on paperbackswap.com if you are a member there. I think it happened in the early 90's?? It just gave me the creeps. It has photos of him while he was in jail and on trial, he just looked creepy. I guess he was skitzophrenic (horrible spelling of that word, LOL, i'm too lazy to look up the correct spelling!) and of course the Amish do not normally send their children to psychologists for testing so he was left unmedicated for many years.

Ah...exactly!!! When I was reading it I was a nurse on 2nd shift (3-11:30) so would be reading it in the late night. I'd hear scratching noises outside and be SCARED TO DEATH!!! I also wouldn't look toward the window because I was afraid a vampire would get me I had told ds all of that, but instead of making him NOT want to read it, it made him WANT to read it.
