Do you choose author's from your home state? Whether it's fiction or nonfiction do you like to read books with settings near your hometown? Have you ever read a book set in your hometown?

Not much to write about in my hometown, but i did read a true crime book from the late 1970's about a battered wife who murdered her abusive husband, it was not far from my hometown. The deceased husband has a lot of relatives in my town still, he grew up here. So it was weird to read about people from my hometown who are still here and alive. My mother remembers all the drama about it back then. The wife did end up serving prison time, but last i heard she is out of prison and remarried,no longer living in Wisconsin. That's probably as close as i will get to a book about my hometown, nothing else to write about otherwise *** If anyone is interested it's called " Man Slaughter" by Steven Englund.

I've chosen a few author's based on the fact that they live in Wisconsin and have enjoyed their books. Michael Perry is a favorite of mine, though he is not well known. He's written " Population 485" and " Truck, a love story" and a few others, but those 2 stand out in my mind the most. Laughter and tears in each one.
Jacquelyn Mitchard who wrote " The Deepest End of the Ocean" (an early Oprah book club pick) is from Wisconsin also. I could kick myself that AFTER the fact, i just found out she was at a library about 20 minutes from me last Thursday night for a book signing.
Jane Smiley, while i don't love all of her books, i certainly enjoyed " A Thousand Acres" very much, it's one of my favorites!!!!

Definately! I often search for books in either the area I live in or areas I've visited that I enjoy...

I haven't really thought about trying to read books from Michigan authors. Although I do think it is neat when I find them. I found a book against evolution that was written by someone in the town I live in, he actually was from the church my hubbys parents go to.
My son used to love reading Michigan Chillers and American Chillers. I think the author was John Rand.

I love to read books that take place near my hometown. There have been a few great books set in Buffalo, NY and I learned alot about the history of the city. There are also a lot of books set in Niagara Falls and I love to read them.

I recently lived in Charlottesville, VA for 8 years and Rita Mae Brown lives there, too - she sets most of her books in that area. I started to read them for that reason but the stories themselves just didn't appeal to me. There are also a few other lesser-known mystery authors from that part of Virginia and I really enjoyed reading their work - it's nice to be able to really know the setting when you read a street name or a restaurant. Every once in a while I will be reading a book and one of the characters will attend UVA, too - that's cool when a local reference appears in a book when you weren't expecting it.
