I used to be like that, i felt like i had some kind of mental obligation to finish everything i started. Not anymore, i finally realized life's too short and their are too many books waiting to be read to waste time on one that's not appealing to me.

I'm an avid reader, but I took "The South in American Literature" in high school - huge mistake - and we had to read "Absolum Absolum" by Faulkner. I think I got to page 15 or so & have never looked at it again. The first sentence was longer than the first page or so. I also had to put down & give up on "James Joyce - Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" - which my brother gave me for my 13th birthday, and some other book....Wuthering Heights. Give me a Shakespeare play any day tho!

This is my main reason for never buying books! I feel no obligation or guilt when I get them at the library to finish! Otherwise I would muddle through even if I hated it.

I try and read it anyway...I have to really really dislike it to put it down. I just got the new Patricia Cornwell Book of the Dead...It took about 9 chapters into it for it to really get good for me (and then I finished it 2 days later). But I felt 'obligated' to try and read it, as she is a favorite author.

i stopped purchasing my books and now just get them from the library. there were so many of them that i read just because i paid for it. now i give it to the third or fourth chapter to see if i like it.
