It was an amazing moment when I realized that I simply could put it down and never look at it again!

I was in my late 20's and had been out of college (where there isn't an option of not reading something because you disliked it). I was attempting to read 100 Years of Solitude (which many of my friends just loved) and I hated it. Just couldn't get that book. Still don't get that book. And I closed it and never went back! Up until then - I finished everything!

By the end of the first chapter, I can usually tell if I'm going to like a book or not.

Recently I tried reading a Patricia Cornwell book. I was so bored and confused by the end of the first chapter that I quit reading it. For some reason, I have a hard time getting into her books.

I don't know why, but I have to finish every book I touch . . . . I am a bit picky about what I read, but whatever it is, it is mine until I hit "The End".

Bad as it sounds, if I am not into the characters or the plot within a few pages, I put the book down and probably won't touch it again!

Yep, I'm right with you on 100 Years of Solitude. It was before I stopped believing Oprah (I still have Anna Karenina - untouched). It is just a boring book and waste of paper, IMO.

Unfortunately, I keep reading, waiting for it to get better, because in many cases it does. Then I end up 3/4 of the way through and think that I might as well finish it.

I really don't muddle thru unless I want to for book club or something. Otherwise, if I'm not into it within the first few chapters, I just return it to the library!

I start and don't finish way more books than I actually read. If I don't like it by the 2nd or 3rd chapter or so, out it goes. I have many other books I'd rather be reading than something I don't.

I must admit, I've sometimes struggled and struggled to finish a book that I wasn't enjoying...not quite sure why. I guess I need to give myself permission to just put it down.

Unless someone has told me that a specific book has a slow start, but stick with it I usually give up within the first 50 pages or so if I'm not into it.

I will most likely finish it. There have been a few books that I had a hard time getting into....and then finished them, and actually LOVED them.

The Horse Whisperer was one of them and that is one of my favorite books...but it did take me a while to get into it....
