Discuss Laila's relationship with her father. What aspects of his character does she inherit? In what ways is she different?

Like her father, Laila is very smart, makes good grades, and believes women should have rights. As for how she's different -- when things start going bad, it seems like he just resigns himself to the situation and doesn't try to do anything to make things better whereas Laila is a fighter and does what she can to improve the situation, as seen at the end where she goes to work teaching at the school.

I think her father would have run away from Afghanistan if his wife would have let them - and I don't blame him one bit. But, Laila goes back to a war torn country where things could turn out very badly for her to fight for women and children.

But, she obviously got her ideals and values from him.
