About The Road:

NOTE: There may be small spoilers in what I am about to say:

I NEVER thought the book was uplifting and I cannot believe that anyone would think so! I guess I liked the book because I am a little obsessed with the end of the world. I got the impression through the book that the man would have easily given up and let himself just die if it wasn't for the boy. I think it's the only thing that kept them going--their love for each other. This book is about survival and the only thing that made them each survive as long as they did was LOVE. The only character we come across through the whole book that was GOOD was the boy. Even when their things are stolen and they get them back, the boy wants to give him something anyway. The "carrying the fire" to me meant more than just keeping a fire going, it was the fire inside the boy. He was pure and if he stayed that way, he could pass his "goodness" along to whoever else was remaining. The end was so bittersweet for me in the way that there was hope for the boy, but ultimately no hope. Throughout reading this book, I felt like I was there with them and I was scared to death. Every time I open a can of fruit I think of this book. Every time I check my cupboard to make sure there are enough batteries to light up Wrigley Park, I think of this book.

I agree about the boy being good and the "carrying the fire" reference which I got. It was inspiring to see how good he was inside while he had known nothing but desperation and starvation his whole life. But I just couldn't get past the depressing feeling of the book. I have a question....did you ever think it would have been more humane for the man to have killed the boy? There were periods I wondered about that, but then I'd think "How can you even think that?"

I guess I'm not a doomsday type person so maybe that's why it didn't impact me quite as much. I'm sort of Pollyannaish in that I always think everything will be fine. And I'm still eating like a pig and haven't bothered to even THINK about it, much less worry about it. Told 'ya I wasn't that deep!!

Actually, no I didn't ever think that. Through the whole book I was hoping for a happy ending, they would come to the promised land and live happily ever after.

See....that's what I kept thinking too! That's why I kept reading. I kept waiting for the "happy ending" which never really came. I thought they'd get to the ocean and there'd be a thriving community which they could join.

I just finished... Amazon.com: Fantasy Lover (Dark-Hunter, Book 1): Sherrilyn Kenyon: Books

I've pulled out the second book... Amazon.com: Night Pleasures (Dark-Hunter, Book 2): Sherrilyn Kenyon: Books

It's fantasy/sci-fi romance. I love this series so far and I've only completed book 1 So that's a good thing.

The first book was about a love slave god that was summoned out of a book for 30 days for this gals' bestfriend that hadn't had any "love" for many years. Anyways he goes back into the book once the 30 days is over. However the gal that he was summoned for refused to have sex with this love slave god as she feels being used isn't acceptable. She begins to live her life with this god in her life. Showing him the ways of her life, modern living and attempts to teach him to drive. He is a God from Macedonia so all this life is far too odd for him. She begins to slowly fall in love with him and in return he loves her back, although loving her back could cost him the life of her. He has angried family that would summon her possibly and harm her just to hurt him, so when the clock strikes the last day...and they haven't had sex yet he vanishes back into the book.

LOVE the book, would loan it to a friend for sure!

The movie 'No Country for Old Men' was weird! After it was over, my dh turned to me and said "Huh?" I only wanted to watch it because my man, Tommy Lee Jones, was in it. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have given this movie and second look.

Thanks for your write up about 'The Road'. I think I'll be skipping this book.

The Road is definitely not for everyone. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with a meek heart, that's for sure. We were talking about it in my book group at the library and I had to tell one of the ladies NOT to read it because I knew she wouldn't be able to handle it.

I am one of those ladies! Boy, talk about hitting the core of all of my insecurities! I made it to about page 45 and had to stop reading for my own mental health! I still get a stomach ache thinking about it!
