Anyone have a recipe for homemade hashbrowns?? I thought if I were to know how to make them than that would save a few bucks by not having to buy the frozen kind. I have tried to make them before. All I did was shredded a potato and than procede to cook it. i dont remember exactly what it did, but I do remember throwing it out. So any tips would be great.

that's all I do besides adding salt/pepper and some onion(shhhh kids don;t know that one yet). sometimes I squeeze the potatoes to get the startch out.
I do think they need to be cooked longer.

found this:
Homemade Hashbrowns
6 medium potatoes
water, to cover
1-2 tablespoon butter or margarine
salt, to taste
pepper, to taste

Peel potatoes if desired. Cut in half and place in large pot. Cover with cold water.
Bring water to a boil and cook until potatoes are just tender (about 10 minutes). Drain.
Place potatoes in large bowl and cover with cold water. Place in fridge over night.
Drain potatoes. Shred with hand grater or food processor.
To cook right away: Heat frying pan over meduim-high heat. Add butter or margarine. Place shredded potatoes in pan. Cook for approximately 5-7 minutes or until bottom is browned. Flip potatoes and cook until browned. Season with salt and pepper.
To freeze: Spray freezer-safe container with cooking spray (I use a plastic ice cream tub). Place a layer waxed paper in the bottom and spray w/ cooking spray. Place a layer of potatoes in container (enough for 1 meal). Place another piece of waxed paper on top of potatoes and spray with cooking spray. Continue layering in this way until all potatoes are used. Freeze until ready to use. Cook as directed above (will take longer).

Thank you. I think that I didnt squeeze out the starch on them when I tried to make them. Maybe that was the problem.

What I do is I nuke my potatoes as if I were making "baked" potatoes. Check to see if theyre done by poking a knife into them to see if theyre soft. Then I take them out to let them cool. If you like the skins leave them on, if not, just take out the insides and slice / chop the potatoes.
heat up a greased skillet and put them in, season and cook until nicely browned.

By doing it this way, you dont get the raw potatoe taste and the cooking time is reduced.
