Does your children's school do silent lunch? My ds is in 4th grade. If they do not get all their work done in class for that morning, they are not allowed to go to the lunchroom to have lunch. they have to get thier lunch and eat it in a separate room and do their work at the same time. I know they do this to teach them a lesson, but they only get twenty minutes to eat, and when you add schoolwork to this, it seems like no time. My son has had it twice now, and both times he said he didn't get to finish his food. What do you think of this? Brandi

Our school doesn't do that...and personally I think it' s mean...Isn't there something for school children that go a full day to be required a 'meal time' . Combining meals with work is not a meal time. I'd check with your Board of Ed on that one.

I thought it was mean too. But I didn't know if I was over-reacting. Thanks.

My son is in first grade. He has mentioned silent lunches, so I know the school does have them. For his school, I think it is more if they are naughty in the lunchroom, then they have a silent lunch. My son said it is in a separate room.

I think its unfair to take lunchtime away for anything other than bad behavior in the cafeteria. The kids need a break during the day. I would talk to his teacher about it. I wouldn't like that if it were my son. I think a more appropriate punishment for not finishing work or listening would be to miss playtime or something like that.

I know that if they don't get certain things done, they bring it home for homework. My son is not disruptive in the lunch room at all, my MIL is one of the monitors. he is also a straight A student. I think I will talk to his teacher.

Our entire school does silent lunch. It is AWFUL. They all sit in a cafeteria, but they get SCREAMED at for talking. I have had several run-ins over this issue..both of MY kids in that school are quiet kids, but I do NOT think it is fair to expect kids to sit through lunch silent. Do THEY sit in silence and eat? I think not! Kids are expected to do so much now...we don't even have a playground here..WHEN are they supposed to let the energy out that comes with being a KID???

Is it just me or are schools becoming meaner and meaner, this is the second post today about something mean happening to kids!

I thought school was a warm nurturing place for kids. where is the teacher/mom on this board? maybe she can answer some of these issues why teachers do this kind of thing. My ds is in KG and I am scared of what he will have to endure to be educated.

My dd's school does silent lunch, but it's different from your child's school. If a bunch of kids act up in class then ALL the kids have to sit quietly at lunch. This punishment irritates me because my dd, according to the teacher, is one of the best behaved kids in class and never causes any problems. Her weekly discipline reports are always perfect. So why is she made to pay for other students' behavior problems?

At my dd's school, if a child doesn't finish their classwork in the time alloted, they have to go to a special room next to the principal's office to complete it during snack time.

I think they need a small part of their day to sit and talk to the other kids. They aren't in bootcamp for goodness sake. Jeesh, they have to sit like little soldiers most of the day during their studies, what's wrong with relaxing while they eat their PB&J sandwiches.

Our schools dont do that either and I personally think that's mean, at such a young impressionable age who would want to be known as an outcast? That's just plain mean.
