I'm curious to know if your state does automobile inspections. Are these performed yearly or a couple of times per year? What exactly is involved?

Alabama does not do automobile inspections. Half the smoke-belching, duct-taped, bungie-corded things that people try to pass off as cars probably wouldn't even pass.

Mine does - you have to have it done once a year.
Mine is due next month, but I'm going to have to put the car in the shop first or it won't pass. The right directional doesn't turn off, and when you try to turn the brights to full on, the switch won't lock into place and the dims go out completely. The directional and the headlamps are on the same handle off the steering column, so I'm pretty sure the whole arm is going to have to be replaced.

California and Utah both have safety and emissions inspections. How often depends on how old your car is. Usually every 1 or 2 years.

Ours have to be inspected once a year. They check everything and if they find something wrong, they rip your inspection sticker in half so you can't drive around without having it fixed.

IN only has 4 counties that need it and I happen to live in it. It is every other year once the vehicle is 4 years old.

Oh yes! Every year and all vehicles. You will get a ticket if you are caught driving with an expired inspection.

No, we did for a few years back in the late 70's early 80's, but it was only for fuel emissions, and it exempted really old cars that have no catalytic convertors. So it was pointless, as the new cars had the converters, and had OK emissions, and the cars that were bad were exempt already.

Does California have a safety check? I thought they only had smog checks.
