It's time for my state background check - what they do it every two or three years? And the new system requires I go to the next town over and set up my appointment via computer. It use to be I could just go down to the sheriff's office on Mondays or something simple like that. I didn't need an appointment and it wasn't a big deal.

Well last week we had to take a kid to the airport and then today, the day we rescheduled for, we forgot. I just got a nasty email saying I wasn't there and in 21 days I will be out of compliance. So now we've rescheduled for next week ... hopefully I will remember this one.

The thing I don't get ... they have my fingerprints. This is probably like the 10th time I've had to be fingerprinted ... you would think, if no criminal issues turned up the first few times that they could just use my old prints (they haven't changed) and run them again.

Not to mention they use to be $10.00 to have them done and now they are like $75.00! Someone is making a killing off of these things.

Anyway, just my vent ... does anyone else have to be fingerprinted?

Parent volunteers at my childrens school require it to work in the classroom! However the school district pays for it.

Before that was when I worked for a bank and it was just once when I was a new hire!

I have been fingerprinted in the past when I worked at daycares and taught preschool and stuff. I agree its a pain in the hiney! You would think they could just run what they have or something. I am pretty sure you are on file. Sorry you have to pay for this.

Your post made me think of ds's last field trip. We were passing the sheriff's department and the teacher who was sitting with her son said "that is where I had to go and get my fingerprints taken" He looked at her and then she added "for work".

Wow, $75 when did ink go up in price.

I have had to have a background check for just about every job I have worked. I have never had to be fingerprinted for them though.

I had to be fingerprinted when I hired in for my job,
but they didn't require me to pay and they just kept
the prints on file and periodically check up on us.
We don't have to go back. Thankfully!

$75 seems excessive!!

After everything you read and hear on the news about caregivers who aren't so...caring...I think background checks are very important and important to keep updated. It's too bad they cost so much, but they are for good reasons imo.

$75 is a lot of money.

Just think of it as one of those things that you have to do like standing in the post office line for 20 minutes.

Since I work for the school system I had to be fingerprinted, but it was computerized and they just periodically run our prints - we only have to go through the process once. I didn't have to pay for it, either. I'm expecting that to change after this year - apparently they had hundreds of people who took the training to become substitute teachers and then never accepted a single job - that cost the school system a bunch for all of those background checks.

Our church requires background checks for people who volunteer with the kids, too, but I am not sure who pays for them. They exempted me from the background check because I had the letter that the school system sent me saying I was "clean" and I gave them permission to contact our principal for more info if they needed it.

It's got to be just a money making thing, as you said, they have your finger prints and they don't change. I can totally see it for new hires. The rest seems like it would easily be updated w/ a form through the mail.
