I have major reactions to mosquito bites so I spend most of the summer inside. I HATE using mosquito repellant because I get weird side effects. My heart races, among other things.

Does anyone else get side effects from bug spray? Is this common?

No but I did learn last night that Scented Soaps and Scented Lotions can attract mosquitoes.

Could be that you're allergic to DEET (the active ingredient in Off and many other insect repellants). I can't use them - DEET turns my skin to sandpaper.
Have you tried some of the botanically based repellants? The active ingredients are citronella and/or eucalyptus oils. They work great for me and where I live, the mosquito is the unofficial state bird.

Try Badger Bug Balm. It is all natural and works. I am very allergic to most things and I can use this. Here is a link to a website that lists the all natural bug stuff and even sunscreens.

My SIL puts a Bounce dryer sheet in her pocket and it keeps them away. She leaves it sticking out a bit. Not always a convenient solution, but good when you're wearing something with pockets.
I am actually allergic to mosquito bites. Something in the stuff they inject into you. Fortunately, I am not allergic to Deep Woods Off-or as my DH calls it, my summer perfume!!!

I'm not allergic to bug sprays, but I hate the feel and smell of them on my skin.

I highly recommend the Off fan thing that you clip onto your clothes. My dad had one on last night. I sat next to him the entire time and didn't get a bite (I usually get eaten alive). Those things really work!
