I am scheduled to run in my first 5K tomorrow morning. They are predicting the weather to be 16 degrees at run time - I know nothing for you Northerners, but that is one of the coldest days I will ever experience in Florida.
So, would you go ahead and do it or would you skip it? I have already prepaid and would lose my money. I found out just now they are not cancelling or postponing.
My boys are scheduled to run in the Fun Run, too. My dh, who has been very, very supportive and encouraging of me doing this, is telling me to skip it as I may have trouble breathing in the cold and have asthma. He wants the boys to skip it for the same reason.
I am nervous about it anyways, but especially with the cold weather. So, what is the consensus on this one?
I hate being out the money!!

How much money are we talking? I'm like you that way, I'd hate to be out of money. But on the other hand, I know nothing about asthma, and if there is the slightest chance it is going to be a problem for you, I'd rather be out the money than have an attack....or worse. KWIM?
I'd prob err on the side of caution on this one.....

Wow! That is pretty darn cold. Do you have one of those things that go around your nose and mouth? I think it's called a gaiter. If I were you I would definitely have something to help warm the air going into your lungs. I don't have asthma but I have run several races in cold weather. In college we had a cross country meet in Maryland and it started snowing (we were wearing tank tops and running briefs---yeah, real attractive but that was our team uniform). I remember my lungs feeling like they were burning when we were done.
If you do decide to do it I must warn you that you will become addicted. My kids did their first fun run early this fall and loved it. It's nice to have a sport in which all ages/abilities can do together. If you decide to do it let us know how it goes. Good luck!!

There's no way I'd run. I have asthma and I try to stay out of the cold as much as can. But if you decide to do it just be careful. Good luck!

I'll tell you this, I wouldn't reccomend it. Both my sister and niece have asthma and the cold weather can lead to a bad attack or at the worst pnuemonia, trust me I have seen this happen. Also 16 degrees can be very dangerous to run in because you will start sweating as you warm up but then because of the cold the sweat is going to soak your clothes thereby making you wet and in that weather that could also lead to pnuemonia or worse with your asthma. I'm sorry that you would lose money but your health is more important, JMO.

I have to agree with the others. That is too cold to run even if you don't have asthma. I am really surprised they aren't postponing it.

Have you asked your doctor's advice? He would know your asthma the best. I think your health is more important than any money you might be out. Let us know what you decide to do.
And as far as if I would do it. . . I wouldn't do it if it were 70 degrees, sunny, downhill, and there was a big ice cream sundae waiting for me at the finish line!

I hate cold weather and running, but together, that sounds like hell to me! No way!

IF I were a runner, BIG IF there, I would not run a race in 16 degree weather, and I m a native Vermonter-we're "used" to those temps!!! Your body is not at all prepared for those kinds of temperatures, and to add asthma to the mix, you might be looking at spending way more than your entrance fee on a long hospital stay, KWIM? Don't want to rain on your parade, just wanted to put it into perspective. I know chances were slim that it'd be that cold there for this race.....I'd wait for a more opportune time to make your running debut!! I admire you for your desire to do this!!
