The few women that age that I have read about who got pregnant had to do so using fertility drugs, extreme hormone treatments, IVF, etc. in order to basically turn back their biological clock and artificially reverse menopause so that the uterus would be capable of forming a placenta.

You father was 73 when your sister was born, but your father wasn't the one who got pregnant. A 73-year-old woman who got pregnant would not only risk fetal damage from past-their-freshness-date eggs, but also damage to her own body due to the various changes brought on by aging - muscles weaken and bones thin with age, joints stiffen, even in the healthiest elderly person. Add the strain of carrying (not to mention delivering) a baby to a hip joint that's in the early stages of osteoporosis, and you've got a disaster looking for a place to happen.
They actually say that men's sperm isn't the highest quality as they age now. It also is risky for a older man to have a child just as it is for a woman. It does not bother me that they have a lot of kids, even if it is an addiction. Some day she will have to stop because at some point she will be in menopause. If the kids are taken care of then let it be. I know I couldn't afford that many mentally or physically. I know woman who had have a healthy baby in their late 40s. It is a risk though to have a baby that late in life but I guess it can be a risk at any age really it just increases as you age.

I don't watch their show and I don't really care what they do. I do have an issue of them making money off their children. I mean, really, why go on Good Morning America to announce your pregnancy!!!!

I think they are a wonderful, healthy, happy, loving, self-supportive, religious family. She inspires me to be a more patient mom that's for sure! For those of you that don't know why they don't believe in birth control- when they were first married and starting out she was on birth control and she had some miscarriages. They thought about it long and hard, prayed about it, talked with their pastor and decided to stop using BC.

I'm not a fan, but I was flipping channels & happened to catch part of the slip & slide episode where she announced her pregnancy. I couldn't believe it because she saying things like "I couldn't figure out why I couldn't lose weight" and that she had "no idea". Really? How many times does she have to be pregnant to recognize the symptoms?

On the plus side, I have to give them credit that the kids are clean, well kept, healthy, and they are providing for them w/o being on welfare. On the negative side, I do think she's one of those who is only interested in being pregnant & dealing with infants (I know 2 people like that - totally focused on that part, and then the kids are handed off to the older sibs). I also think they are religious nutjobs. There is no way that 19 kids can even be considered a "big family" by traditional catholic standards.

I didn't see her on Good Morning America, but that is pretty funny. It does seem like she would know the instant she got pregnant by now LOL. I guess 19 kids is quite beyond a big family as well. Good points Although I have never seen the show. I have heard about them and read articles.

They are not catholic. I don't recall what denomination they are, but I know they are not Catholic. THIS is part of what they believe as Christians.

Thier son Josh took a vow in his wedding that he would 'accept that the number and timing of his children would be determined by God' as well, though he does NOT hope to have as many children as his parent do.

I know they are not Catholic. I just used Catholicism as a reference point because birth control is not permitted in that faith (although many ignore that nowadays) and very large families is considered a "hallmark" of traditional Catholicism, which is why they were discriminated against by Protestants in the past.

I agree with you.

I don't think anyone should tell them what to do but I personally think it is wrong to have that many kids. How do you even know them all?

You know, two children ago, I was more like, "Good for them!" And I still am with her having as many kids as they want, can afford, etc. BUT it's the TV/media thing that has me thinking, making a buck this way, (exploitation) is not really a good thing.

But are they really exploiting thier family? I don't think they are. They don't use them for entertainment the way the Gosselins do. They were debt free and self supporting BEFORE the show, I'm sure they could do it again if the show ended tommorrow.
