I think everything is fine in moderation. My husband's best friend since childhood and his wife do not allow their son (who is now 6) to watch any TV, he's never been trick or treating because she doesn't allow him candy (he gets to dress up and stay at home to pass candy out to others), never had soda, only orders off of the adult menu at restaurants (because the kid's menus are soo awful), never had french fries, he's never even had a piece of birthday cake (including his own-even when everyone else- including his parents- are having some). She says "he doesn't miss what he's never had".
She is one of those people who looks down on others for allowing those things.
She must think my family is crazy. LOL!

I haven't posted on the other threads yet, just because I haven't had a chance to read through them yet. I will be honest....yes DS has a tv in his room. There are limits as to what he can watch, not really time limits but the type of show. He does drink soda, but again in moderation. I do have rules about sweets. Basically he doesn't really eat all the sweet treats Monday-Thursday and try to save them for the weekends as a special treat.

I am always honest, I just pick and choose what I respond too. And that is only because I have felt attack on here a time or two when I have given my two cents worth on a topic.
Pop-yes my kids drink it. Not at home. If we go to fast food than they can choose what they want to drink. Sit down places, we all order water.
TV-no tv in their rooms. They do have one in their play room. It only gets a handful of channels. I think yes my kids watch a little too much tv. But they are very smart kids and both are reading above their age group. Many times the tv is on as back ground noise. They run, jump, scream and play like healthy kids.
Candy-I am a little more of a hard a$$ with that. They get to eat most of their candy but in moderation and over weeks or months. All my kids would eat all their candy until they sick.
I am not a perfect parent nor would I ever act like I am. I do my best every day to raise kind, courteous little men.

My kids don't have tvs in thier rooms, but they can spend LOTS of time in the living room watching tv. They take over, and I don't have a say. If someone is watching Disney, and the other wants to watch NIck, they just go in my room

My kids drink soda weather I let them or not. I buy soda, I expect them to ask permission before taking it, they either sneak it, or just take it without telling me. My middle one is FAMOUS for this. Yesterday she took a brand new can out of the fridge, opened it, started drinking it, then told me she 'found' it on the counter.

Same with the candy. I just don't want them eating it in one whole night.

LOL, well I am grateful for the normal responses.

I too think that I avoid posting on some, because we all have our vices and parent differently. It's just nice to see the "bad mom" come out sometimes, to let us all know that we are normal and not text book perfect! :-)

I'm honest. I just think a lot of mom's don't want to response if they think they will be attacked.

I agree. That's why I sometimes don't post. Some people on here can go over-the-top on their comments towards others (i.e. "I just can't believe you'd do that!!", which is a roundabout way of calling someone an idiot) and I just don't feel like being the recipient.

As for soda, I explained that drinking one completely screws up my metabolism and I figure that could happen to dd too, so I rarely let her drink any. I don't have a thing about sugar, high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, or any of that type of junk so I don't panic over what dd eats, although I do the usual mommy thing and try to get her to eat fruits and veggies as much as I can.

Halloween candy - not only does dd eat it, I snarf it down too! I go trick or treating with dd and if the person gives her a choice on candy, I'm the one telling her "Pick the Peanut M&Ms--I like those!"

Dd doesn't have a TV in her room because she'd probably stay in there all the time staring at the thing. She does watch quite a bit of TV in the living room on the weekends and over summer, but I'm not worried about it.

I answered both threads about the pop and tv.

No my kids don't have tv's in their rooms that they watch but they do watch it in the kitchen, livingroom and familyroom whenever they want. My DS does have a tv in his room that he uses for video games only it has no cable hooked up to it.

As for pop they don't drink a ton of it because the only time it is in our house is when we have a get together or upset tummies, they are allowed to have it when we go out to eat or at other people's places. Most of the time they will drink when we go out: Hi-C orange, lemonade or Mt. Dew.

As for the Halloween candy they eat what they want and for the first night how much they want then after that they are pretty much sick of the stuff.

I have nothing to hide about my kids, love them dearly but they can be little dickens at times even at the ages of 10 almost 11 and 17. Nothing surprises me with them, they tell things like it is and probably tell my DH and I stuff we probably shouldn't know, not sure if that is a good thing or not, but it is what it is.
