do you just put it back on the shelf, or take it up to the service desk and tell them what happen.
I went to Burke's outlet at lunch to get a soap dispenser and tissue box for our "new" remodeled bathroom.
I picked up a soap dispenser and the back was broken out of it. So I took it up to the service desk, and turn it in. Mainly because it was sharp and I didn't want anyone to get cut.
The lady took it, but she looked at me like "well are you going to offer to pay for it ".
I was just wondering if most people put stuff back that they broke or turn it in.

I once found an incredibly sharp, long knife UNWRAPPED on a rack at TJ Maxx, it just had a price sticker on it but the blade was fully exposed!!!. I made sure to bring it to the service desk. I really get goosebumps thinking what could have happened had a child found it!

I've worked retail so long that it really doesn't phase me and I'd just turn it in.
Once, long time ago, there were these two kids running a muck in the store. They were beyond bad, people were even complaining about them. I was busy with customers and didn't have a chance to go up and tell them to knock it off. Anyway, all the sudden I hear a CRASH! I look up, to the front of the department, I was in back on the cash register, and these two kids managed to knock over and break the mannequin. I'm not even sure how they did that as it was up on a shelf and not easily reached. The dad (yes they had a parent with them) comes back, I'm expecting an apology at this point and says, "You people need to make sure these mannequins are more stable."
Thankfully they didn't shop with us very often.

I've always 'turned it in',, but I've always been told, "Oh, that's ok, don't worry about it." However, when/if I have to pay, figure it's fair.

That's what has happened to me as well.

Good thing she didn't ask out loud. I can just hear it:
Her: Are you going to offer to pay for this?
You: I would if I had broken it. As it is, I'll be paying for it when prices go up due to loss of inventory.

If i broke it, yes i turn it in. If someone else broke it.......i'm afraid of getting the blame! lol. I did break a glass in Goodwill once, accidentally knocked it off the shelf with my purse. Took it to the front and they told me not worry about it. I was willing to pay for it though.

My kids have broken a few things in stores over the years and I almost always buy the item. When my oldest was two or three, he broke a wooden Baltimore Orioles nutcracker (broke the baseball off the hand). We literally took our eyes off of him for a minute but that was all it took. Not ony were we embarassed, we also didn't think the store should have to pay for something our child did when we weren't paying attention, so we bought it. The darn thing cost $50! Did I mention that it's also very ugly? And to make matters worse, when we got it home we noticed that it was missing an ear so it was technically "damaged" anyway. After trying (with no luck) to find someone to gift it to, we finally decided to keep it. We display it every Christmas - missing ear and all.

I've never broken anything at a store, but if I did...I would tell the store what happened and offer to pay for it. Although over the years, I've read and heard that a customer that breaks something shouldn't offer to pay, that the store's insurance would cover it. I have no idea if that's accurate though!

Even if the insurance will cover it, I still think you should offer to pay. If my child broke someone's window, I would offer to pay for it. If they told me that their insurance would cover it, fine, but I would still feel obligated to make the offer.
