Do you do it after every shopping trip or just occassionally?

I have done so on and off but after one of the posters talked of overcharges I looked at my last few grocery register receipts. Today I went back to the Store and ended up with $8.68 in my pocket. On 22 Oct canned Delmonte Mandarine Oranges were on sale for .85, I had a coupon for $2 off $10 in purchases so calculated and got the right combo. I had so much in the cart I could not watch it being rung up and forgot to check. THey rang up at $1.40 each. They had also charged me for 5 of an item I know I only purchased 4 of (due to sale/coupon match up). Even tho some time has gone by they still credited me the difference because the computer proved I was in the right. So do not be afraid to challenge the store.

Lesson learned... check the receipt before leaving the parking lot... even if it is over 2ft long

Definately! I watch as items are being scanned, and I will chirp up if the price is ringing up differently than what was tagged or advertised. If I'm not able to watch the items being ringed up for whatever reason, I stop for a second and check my receipt, before I leave the store.

I agree I always try to check my reciept before I leave the store. I will usually take my cart and 'park' it along the wall while I look to see if everyting is correct before I even go outside to the car. One time the cashier did not double ANY of my coupons, and I went to the desk and they owed me about $6!

I use to watch the scanner faithfully but with little ones that is more difficult at this stage in their lives. But yes, I always check the receipt.

One day this summer we were at Dollar General. My dd wanted this stuffed Tigger that cost $5.00. I didn't think it was worth that, but I let her get it. When we got to the register I asked the clerk "any chance this is on sale?". He rang it up and it was $3.75. Much better! My point is, if I expect to pay what the tag reads, I won't notice any discrepancies. It is when I KNOW that something was a certain price or that I have a coupon for it that makes me double check the receipt. And I always check the receipts whenever I use coupons.

Now that my kids are older, I'm not as distracted if I'm shopping with them and have them take the items out of the cart at checkout so I can watch the scanner. Especially at Walmart. I like that Target's receipts show a little arrow if something was marked down. I feel like I won something when something is marked down but not advertised!

I normally check the register as the items ring up, otherwise, I glance at the receipt before I leave. I usually keep a tally (rounded figure) in my mind when I'm shopping anyway, and it's always within $5.00 above/below.

I try to keep an eye as they are ringing but it is hard when you've got a lot of items or little ones. I usually pull my cart aside when I'm done to check. I especially look for the "buy 1 get 1 free" sales. That's when a lot of items tend not to ring up properly. I don't fuss if the discrepancy is under a $1, but sometimes it is worth the extra time getting your money back. And, working for a bank, I have seen people file disputes for $.01!

Also, at my Kroger's, if I or the cashier, forgets a coupon, customer service always gives me the refund.

Just yesterday at Walmart, I was watching the stuff as she rang it up. I bought 2 boxes of toaster strudels. They were in a big endcap freezer with a big sign that read 1.98 each. SO I grabbed an apple one and a wildberry one. The apple one rang up 2.12 while the other rang up 1.98. I was watching!! SO I stopped the cashier and said "Wait! Why did this one right up at 2.12?? She had no idea. When I explained that I got them from the same freezer with the big sign, she voided the price and rang it for 1.98 without flinching.

Can you imagine HOW many people never noticed and just took thier groceries and ran?? It may not be alot, but it adds up!
