I would probably take a casserole over to his house so he can eat it at a later date while he's recouping.

You know him the best obviously...what does he like? Does he like to read? Does he like movies?

If you don't know him that well on a personal level, I would probably just send flowers and a card to his house after he is discharged, wishing him a speedy recovery.

My boss had the same thing done yesterday!

I got him a gift card to Barnes and Nobel and also a gift card to Movie Gallery!

I gave it to him last week so that he could go pick out the books and read them while he is recovering.

I am also going to take him a fruit basket tomorrow!

Hey, it never hurts to "suck up" to the boss

LOL Those are really great ideas! I was thinking along those same lines...like a carepackage or something.

Not sure how much you wanted to spend, but here is an idea:

Get Well Soon Care Package - Gift Baskets by Occasion at Gift Baskets

You could either send this, or use it to come up with your own basket!

Thanks ladies. I like the idea of giving him a card with a gift card to a book store, and give it to him the day before his surgery (he's working the day before). The secretary usually sends out a basket from the department (everyone pitches in) after the surgery while he's recovering. But I wanted to do something myself before he goes.
