Thinking about getting one for the kids, for if/when they go somewhere, they could take it with them. Any good ones out there you can recommend?

Tracfone is good. There's always bonus codes available for extra minutes. You can also get a Motorola 376 double minutes for life phone for ~$30 at Target or Walmart.

My dd's phone got stolen out of her purse at school during band. We were able to buy another cheap phone, and they transferred her number and the remaining minutes to her new phone.

I second Tracfone. DH and I each have one and we're on a Family Plan, where a number of minutes that I have selected gets added to each of them automatically each month (and doubled - since both our phones came with double minutes plans), and our credit card gets charged. It costs $17 per month and he gets 60 minutes and I get 100 minutes - so it works out to about 10¢ per minute, but there are no other charges and no contracts.

So Im wondering, I guess it depends on how much they'd use the phone. Not much at this point, theyre not phone kids and the girls are almost 14!! We could get a free phone thru t-mobile and pay 9.99 a month for the added phone. But I figured, if they dont use it much, just get one of these cheaper phones and just pay for the minutes as we need them so there wouldnt be a monthly charge.

I was looking at the one with double minutes at walmart. Sounds like that might be the way to go?

For teens, I prefer pay as you go phones over adding an additional line to your phone plan. I've seen so many phones get stolen (or lost) at school, and if they get a hold of your "plan" phone, they can rack up a lot of calls, text, and even data charges (depending on the phone) before you get the phone canceled on your plan. Replacing the phone may also cost much more than the $10 the original phone cost to add the line.

Now that I think of it, I traded my go phone for my dd's tracphone. She texts, and texts, and texts over phone calls. You can get a $5/month text plan with go phone. The cost per minute for calls is more with go phone, but tracphone doesn't offer a text plan option.

I bought a prepaid phone in 2003. I got it from Radio Shack. The phone is motorola, with Cingular Service.

I have upgraded once, because they upgraded the phones, and they made me

My phone was around $90. I buy a $25 card, which is good for 3 months. And if you don't use all of your minutes within the 3 months, they roll-over when you purchase a new card.

I love my phone, and would recommend it to anybody.

DH and I are going to get rid of our cell phones and go back to a land line and get a prepaid phone. He's a bit tech guy so he has done all the research and Virgin is the best prepaid to get! I would have never thought of Virgin but apparently it is the best one to go with!

I have a prepaid Boost and I've been happy with it. You only have to put money on every 90 days $10 for 100 minutes.

DH has a boost mobile by Nextel/Sprint. For $50 a month you get unlimited minutes and texting. You have to buy the phone seperate, I think the cheapest one they have was like $49 then every month you pay $50 prior to, so that you are paid up for one month. It works great for him,
