A parent at my son's school has asked me to transport her daughter to her after school care four days a week. I would pick her up and take her to her after school program. It's about a 15 minute drive. When i get there someone would come out and get her from my car because i don't want to take the other three kids into the school and i won't leave them in the car.
I don't think i should do it for free. It is four days a week and it's my time and car. So how much would you think i should charge? I told her $45/month....that's less then $3/day.
Do you think that was too much, just right or not enough?

Thanks for any input,
Jodie

It would depend...Is the 15 min drive on your way home anyway? Is the 15 min drive the opposite direction so then you have to turn around and drive extra distance home? Is this a good friend of yours? Or a mere acquaintance? If it's totally out of your way and she's a mere acquaintance, then I'd say that is fine. If it's on your way home and a friend, that seems high. Just depends.

It is way out of my way. I leave the school go in the opposite direction from my house and then pass the school on my way back home.

She is a friend but only because her daughter is in my son's Kindergarten class. We don't hang out or talk to each other regarding anything other than the kids.

If that amount covers your gas & time, I would say it sounds fair, maybe even start by telling her $50 a month, see how its working for you and then you can always lower the amount. (or raise it if this becomes a PIA) Good luck.

I found out when we moved to Canada - I had never heard of this in the U.S. but it's worth checking out - that if someone is paying you to drive them, you are liable (monetarily) if there is an accident. It's just as if you were a cab driver or bus driver. If you are not being paid, you are not legally liable. We always think, "Oh, they wouldn't sue us" but I've seen some nasty stuff go down with parents at my daughter's school. Good luck!

Cheers, from

Probably the easiest way is to figure the mileage and cost of gas, so youre figuring $3/day sounds just about right - depending on the gas mileage your car gets. You might want to up it $50 like someone said to include a little extra for your time. If Im reading correctly, thats 1/2 hour out of your day. Thats a lot. Im surprised she didnt offer to pay you since its way out of your way. Let us know what happens, but certainly dont do it for free!

As for an accident, any time someone is in your car your legally liable. That is what insurance is for and it would pay to cover anybody in your car.

Back when Dustin was in preschool I picked up another little girl from preschool and took her back to daycare (our daycare) I was supposed to get $5 a week. (her mom hardly ever paid we though, that is is different story!) I was going there any way though so it was not a big deal to me. So I think $45 -50 sounds about right.

$50.00 was the first price that popped in my mind. I think that is fair.
