So my husband started a new job in San Diego, Ca. We live in Texas, so every Sunday night I take him to the airport for his 1100 mile commute and then every Friday we pick him up to spend the weekend at home. I'm not sure how long I can do this before we end up moving to California. My whole family lives here in the Dallas area. It will be so very hard to leave them, but it's equally hard being away from husband 5 days a week and my kids not having their father around. Anyway, so my husband gets paid last Friday and he went to deposit it in Bank of America because they don't have the direct deposit set up yet and the teller tells him there will be a 2-5 day hold. Okay no problem. The hold was to be released yesterday. So I go to check our balance and it hasn't posted yet. My husband calls the bank and they inform him there will now be an addition 12 day hold! What? We will not even have those funds until he gets his next paycheck. What are we suppose to do? We've tried talking to managers at the bank and they say there is nothing they can do. I don't believe it because at our previous bank they have released holds on other types of checks for us. I just want to cry. I do not know what to do. Plus we have to pay all his travel expenses and then they are reimbursed. Well we are just getting into the cycle of reimbursement beginning this Friday which is being direct deposited into the same account that has the hold on the paycheck. Arggggg!!!!

Can your DH check with the company he works for to see if the problem is from their end?
That's the only thing I can think of. I agree with you sometimes life sucks. I hope it gets better.

We had this happen at the bank we first signed up with here in TN. We immediately took our business elsewhere. It sucked, too, since we HAD to leave a balance in that account or be charged a fee for closing it within a year. Grr... It was only a $25 balance or $25 fee, but still. Dh did find out a few weeks ago, though, that because we have that balance, we are entitled to a $1000 life insurance policy through them at no expense to us. HA!! Got them for something!!
I am so sorry that things are like this right now. I so wanted to know what was going on, but I was scared to ask! You do know that I have been in your shoes. I did the move not quite 18 months ago...ten hours from my family, friends, and only place we had ever called home together. It was TOUGH. I thought I was going to die at first....BUT my faith got me through it, and now, although I would go closer in a heartbeat, I cannot imagine NOT living here. I LOVE IT HERE...as do all of my children. Please know you are in my prayers...and if you need anything at all, holler.

WHY would they hold his paycheck?? That's crazy!!
My sister just now has gotten her husband "back." He has worked on the road for the past 4 years...while she stayed at home and worked and raised their two little girls. He was usually gone Monday through Friday every week unless there was a holiday or a problem with his job scheduling. It's a very hard thing to do. I hope everything works out for you very soon!

He did check with his employer and the check has already cleared their bank! I just spoke with someone at Bank of America and they said there are no federal guidelines that prohibit a branch from holding your money. Seriously they can hold it as long as they want? The only saving grace we have is to have my husband go speak with the branch manager because they do have the authority to lift the hold. I know it will get better and my little problem pales in comparison to most. I just don't have a very good outlook right now.

I bank at BofA, and inexperienced (read stupid) tellers try this trick with us occasionally for dh's expense checks because the company does their banking w/an out of state bank. Also, the ATM people do it. We do two things: we don't deposit these checks thru the ATM, and, if the teller gives us an issue (yes, we even ask sometimes), we go directly to the manager. We've been with the bank since 1992 and we get very pi$$ed when they don't use their heads.
Go to the manager. We've never been turned down. Also, have the manager put a notation on the account so you don't have to argue in the future, but still make sure w/the teller during the deposit. Don't let them take advantage of you.
The ATM and 1-800 people are useless for this. Only the manager or head teller will do.

Why do the banks do that? If the check has already been deposited on the employers side how can they keep your money from you?
I would find a new bank. I'm sure they all don't do that. If your husband let them know your thinking of closing your account maybe they would pick up the spead. It's disgusting what they are doing to you.

Melissa, I am sorry that things are not good right now. I hope they soon improve.
I have never heard of a banking putting a hold on a check. I don't quite understand it.
