We read to our children every night until they were probably 11 or 12. They are both excellent readers who read way above grade level, but one of my friends who is a teacher told me it's good to read to them even after they could read, because you help them learn pronunciation and voice inflection and can read words possibly above their reading level. We still read all the new harry potter books when they come out as a family even though they were 13 & 15 when the last one came out. We had started them when they were younger, so it's sort of our tradition. My dh often read the Redwall series of books together with my son even after he could read them alone because they enjoyed sharing them.
As far as books all your older children might enjoy....both of my kids...boy & girl...enjoyed Harry Potter series, Lord of the Rings series, Chronicles of Narnia series, Redwall series...hmmm have to think of some others. Frankly my son doesn't care for "tame" books, so prefers more fantasy type books like those I mentioned.
I know I've probably bored everyone to tears talking about reading so many times, but it's a really big deal in our family. We always read a lot, we went to the library a lot, and our children STILL love to read. Getting a book card is one of their favorite gifts. Okay... off my soapbox n my soapbox:
