Has anyone ever made a doll house from a kit before? My older DD and I want to start it as a very long term project. I was wondering if anyone has some pointers for me. I know it can get expensive but I am buying the kit through Ebay. I went to AC Moores and the stuff there was so much money but it looked like fun.

What type of doll house? I made my dd a barbie house for xmas last year and think it turned out really good. It didn't cost that much either.

Here's a picture, sorry if it's big

What kind of kit? There are so many out there from easy as pie to "get me the dynamite, NOW!". And all of todays doll houses can be set up with actual wiring for working lights and what not.

Several years ago my DH and I finished my moms for her by putting on the siding and shingles. Relatively easy. It was a 2 story colonial home that she wanted for her grandbabies to play with. Sadly though it sits and collects dust as I need to bring it here and I have no room for it. Nor is it constructed for child play.

Shortly after finishing hers I bought one for myself. My dream home I called it. A 3 story farm house. I've never finished it. This thing is very detailed. The foundation is actually little bricks you have to mold yourself. I still collect furniture for it for that someday that I finish it.

My problem isn't having time to finish it. Use to spend an hour or so at night working on it, the problem is the space that it takes to work on it. I don't have a house that has a lot of space and with 4 kids I'm not big on just leaving it lay somewhere. Pieces have a tendancy to disappear around here.

For the most part any doll house you get is pretty easy to construct if you follow the instructions. Most come with pre-cut parts that you just glue together, but I would definetly make sure you have a place you can leave it set all the time and make sure you have a lot of patience when working on it. They don't go together over night, and I've had nights when they don't go together at all. Oh and make sure you have lots of masking tape to hold together pieces you have glued that you don't want to hold til dry.

Other than that, be creative and have fun. The finished product will be well worth the nights of newly invented words. lol. Good luck!

The barbie house is very cute. You did a great job!

I know it will be very time consuming but the thought of making it just seems like a good hobby. I am going for the kit that glues together so the masking tape idea is great! Thanks for the advice!
