I compare my current tax return with my last year's tax return just to double check. Yes, the program alerts you, but sometimes I get confused and give the program the wrong answer. For instance, what line does the tax off the vehicle registration go? I always forget that and have to look it up to correct it later.
Do make sure you go to the IRS.gov website and pull up the PDF file for the 1040 instruction book. In the beginning there is a couple of pages about "what is new for 2006 filing" and it pays to go through that. The tax program companies say they updated all their on-line software to reflect the changes that happened just recently - even some changes since the instruction booklet was published! - but I like to do the reading just so I know what is going on.
Lastly, if your tax situation didn't change much from last year but you're getting a much larger refund that before, you may want to review your forms to see why there is a big difference. You know, if your usual home mortgage interest deduction is something like $1,500 and you accidently typed in $15,000, you want to be able to catch that.
