Tainted peanut butter...questions

My sister found a jar of the "tainted" peanut butter in her cabinet...and also a half eaten jar of it! Her dh was the one who had been chowing on it and now he's sick. What are the symptoms of salmonella? Did people actually get sick from it or was it discovered before anyone got sick? I haven't read alot about it, but am a bit concerned about my sister's dh. Also..was it contained to one area of the country or was it sporadic if people did get sick?

We got hit here in Arizona, so it seems to have been pretty widespread. Salmonella is food poisoning, so my understanding is it's a really bad stomach flu, but could be worse, depending. You've probably googled it by now, and if there are questions, she should contact her local poison control center. Either way, I wouldn't take it lightly or wait.

Yes people have gotten sick! We had a half eaten 6lb tub at our house, no one had gotten sick, but I still returned it and would not let any one eat anymore of it.

Symptoms are typically diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal cramps. It will more then likely run it's course, but I would go to the dr anyway. HIs regular dr or urgent care, I would avoid the ER as he'd probably sit there for hours before being seen anyhow. From what I understand, regular Salmonella they don't treat with anything- just treat the symptoms.

Yes, people have gotten sick from this outbreak. From what I understand it dates back to August of last year and has affected over 300 people. Both my sister and her husband eat Peter Pan (and the walmart brand) peanut butter and had several tainted containers in their pantry. My brother in law got extremely sick in December with symptoms similar to salmonella - he ended up in the ER twice for tests and IV fluids. His illness was never diagnosed as salmonella, but looking back now, we wonder if that's what it was and if it's related to the peanut butter. Both he and my sister love peanut butter so they eat it often.
If you suspect that's what your brother-in-law might have, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea for him to see or at least call his doctor. IF it is salmonella and they can trace it back to the peanut butter, I would imagine they would want to report it to the CDC or FDA or the health department or whoever tracks and manages these outbreaks.

Well dangit, he went to the ER...at 3 a.m. this morning. My sister tried to get him to go yesterday and he just wouldn't go. He said he was feeling better, but I think he lied. He's also having some trouble with a bad knee, so he thought maybe that was what it was (it has gotten infected before and made him very sick). Anyway, who did they call to come and stay with their girls at 2:30 a.m.??? Yeah. The ER doctor was a jerk. He wouldn't let my sister go back with him at first and talked to my BIL like he was a drug addict looking for drugs or something. He asked what the problem was and when my BIL presented him with the TWO things he has going on (fever, nausea, diarrhea, chills...and then the knee) would you know he had the nerve to ask, "So which one do you want fixed tonight?" If my sister had been back there, she would have asked, "Is there something in the oath you took that says you can only treat one illness per patient???" She was so mad. He treated both, eventually, but there's still no conclusion as to whether he has a bad virus or salmonella. He didn't even do any tests to check (from my understanding, the only way to really be sure is a stool sample as the information I read online says it's contained to the intestines and even vomiting doesn't always happen with salmonella). Soooo...it's still inconclusive. If I were him, I'd do a follow up today with a regular doctor (he's sleeping off the shots right now...they did at least treat his symptoms) but you know how men are...grrrrr. We'll see what he does.
OTOH...my sister who is 7 months pregnant and already exhausted WENT TO WORK THIS MORNING...with only about 3-4 hours of sleep. I asked her if she was insane...just send get well wishes this way so bil can feel better soon and my sister can get some rest.

I'm sending get well wishes to your BIL. Hopefully your sister will be able to get some rest soon.
We had 2 jars (one basically empty and the other about half) that we tossed. We go through about a jar every week or week and a half so I'm considering myself pretty lucky for not getting sick. But I'm so annoyed by the whole thing.

I looked at the FDA's website and found out that it's Peter Pan and Great Value. I have a half eaten Jar of Great Value Brand in my cabinet with the same code on the top. The only thing is, they said made by CongraAngra foods.....I don't see anywhere on my jar where it says CongraAngra . I think I will get rid of it just in case .

We had it! I called our family doctor to see what the symptoms were, and she said nausia, severe stomach pains, and diahrea. She said to make sure you stay hydrated and treat it like the flue. She said there was nothing they could do for it, we just had to let it run it's course. It's not been fun, and I've changed so many stinky nasty diapers... I can't wait for it to finally be over with! I hope he feels better soon too
