I woke up to DH yelling "Ginny!!! Hurry!!" I jumped out of bed and ran out of our bedroom just in time for the smoke detectors to start blaring. My one year old was in the upstairs hall looking confused, so I grabbed him and ran downstairs. Apparently, DH was wanting some tea, so he turned on the stove. Well, it was the wrong burner and had a tupperware lid sitting on it. He went back upstairs to change the one year olds diaper and heard a "whoosh". He knew immediately that it was fire. He could see the flames reflecting in the tv and ran downstairs. He took a bucket of water and dumped it on the flames and put them out, but not before the microwave that is above the stove turned black and gray smoke filled the entire house! It was really bad upstairs and I had to open all the windows and the patio door, turned on all the exhaust fans in the bathrooms and the kitchen and the ceiling fans to try to clear everything out. I wish we had a whole house fan. It was scary how quickly it all happened and how fast the house filled with smoke. It could have been so much worse! The older kids didn't even wake up from all the noise! I had heard that little kids don't wake up from smoke alarms, but that really scared me that they wouldn't wake up. I know there are new smoke detectors for kids that talk instead of ring. We are going to try to find them and change out the ones in their room. Even though they are 4 and almost 3, we are going to have some serious fire drills and talks and I'm going to go buy those ladders for the bedrooms. Can you tell I'm a little freaked out?

I'm glad that it wasn't any worse than what it was! I've never heard of the talking smoke alarms...I wonder if they work any better?

I've heard of them before. I think they are supposed to be less scary for the kids. If I remember right you record the message that it plays.

Some are pre-recorded and some you record in your own voice. Forbes had an article that I'll have to find so I can put the link up, but it said that they did a test with 24 sleeping kids and that only one woke up with the regular smoke alarms. All woke when they heard their mother's voice recorded saying, "Get up, there is a fire! Wake up, check the door..." It plays the recording over and over and can give little ones instructions of what to do. I've found one at Home Depot and one at Lowe's now. I've been calling places all morning.
Gosh darn! My microwave will not get white again! I've been cleaning it for an hour and it still has huge black parts, especially the handle. Anyone know of anything that might get it out?
