DD and I were out running errands this morning when DH calls me on my cell. He says our alarm company had just called him and said that our alarm went off at home, they couldn't get anyone to respond, so they were sending a squad car out to the house. I turn the car around to head home and a squad car zips by me, hauling tail like nobody's business. I think, "I wonder if he is going to my house?" Sure enough, he was.

We all get out and he takes my keys and heads inside the house. I stand there not knowing what to do until he tells me to come on in. He checks all the doors and they are locked up tight just like I left them. He looks all around but can't find anything wrong. He calls the dispatcher back and asks what alarm went off and they tell him it was the motion detector. He asks me if we have any pets that could have set it off but I tell him there is no way our cat did it. Its too high up and our cat is way to lazy to jump that high. LOL He says everything looks good but you might want to have the alarm company come out and just check to make sure there aren't any shorts in the system or anything. I agree. I am walking him to the door when I suddenly see what has happened. Before I can say a word, he looks up and notices two spongebob helium balloons that my parents bought Riley last week just floating along in the breeze from our heater. SpongeBob set off our alarm!!!!! I was absolutely mortified. I never in a million years thought about the balloons setting off the motion detectors. I think I apologized about a million times. He says it happens more than you think but I'll bet he told lots of his buddies about the lame mom who left SpongeBob out to set off the alarm.

Been there, done that. We would put the balloons in a room where there was no motion detector.

That exact same scenrio happened to one of my friends this week, she had gotten her little boy a Spongebob balloon for Valentines Day. Only thing is that is one of the questions the alarm company dispatcherasked her so the police did not respond. all was ok.

Yeah, we've BTDT too!! Were you charged with a "false alarm"? Our police department only gives us 2 false alarms within a 2 year period and then they cancel our alarm permit.

That's almost as funny as the hooker boots story...ALMOST!! That IS funny! I can just imagine the way I'd feel if something like that happened to me. Unfortunately, we live so far out in the country that an alarm system wouldn't help us. The burglar could have done packed a U-Haul and headed out with everything we own by the time an officer arrived here!
