Well, my mom called yesterday and told me she was being admitted to the hospital w/pneumonia. Ok, that's normal this time of year in IN.

Then, her nurse calls me around three today to tell me that she went unresponsive on them. They gave her three different drugs a total of six times to no avail. And oh, yeah, we're moving her to the ICU. But she's ok.

So, if she's so ok why do I get yet another call a couple of hours later to tell me that she's on a ventilator? How is that ok? And they don't really know what's wrong except for respiratory failure. But they don't know why she's in resp failure!

So she'll be on this machine for at least a few days. I'm just so frustrated not knowing why.

And to top it all off somehow the nurses decided I work in the ICU in the other hospital in town. Now where they got this idea since they called me at a nursing home earlier to talk to me I really don't know.

Well, thanks for listening to me vent.

Are you at work? Are you able to go be with her? Is there anyone there with her? It sounds serious to me. I hope you can get there to be with her soon.

Oh my goodness! I hope all will be OK. This is scary. How far away is she? The whole thing seems weird - thank goodness you know a bit about the profession, but it does sound (from here) like a mistake has been made. Prayers for you both!

I'm a Respiratory Therapist and I have seen a few incidences where a patient has come to the ER with pneumonia and had it so bad or were so sick that I ended intubated them and putting them on a ventilator.
Usually they have been sick for a while...have been to the doctors....gotten antibiotics...never started feeling better...started feeling worse...end up in the ER and then started getting tests and the standard treatment....gradually get worse and then end up in resp. failure and on a vent.
Of coarse...as you know... once they are critical......tx gets a bit more agressive and I've seen patients off in 3 or 4 days.
I hope your mom is O.K...but I just wanted to to let you know that it is a common thing and maybe it was something that could not be prevented....even if you your mom did all the right things and she got the approppriate care.
I'll send a little prayer your mom's way...
Heather
