How many of you hire carget cleaner people to come do the job and how many do it yourself with a rug Doctor type thing. DH and I are trying to decide and would love input.

TIA

I have never used a carpet cleaning machine such as the Rug Doctor so I dont know how they work. Personally, we hire a professional carpet cleaner to come in and do our living room. To me, its worth the money to not have the hassle of doing it myself.

I have never hired any one. I just rent a rug dr if I need too. They are pretty easy to use.

I have done both and I think its better to hire a pro. The carpet just looks better when I hire it done than when I do it.

I have my own cleaner. But I also heard after deep cleaning carpets you wash away any protectants and that you need to spray the carpets with scotch guard so it doesnt get dirty right away.

We have done both and I can honestly say that we prefer to hire someone. Those ones you rent are heavy and a pain to deal with, especially if you are doing several rooms. The cost of hiring someone isn't to bad so we opt to do it that way.

ITA! Several years ago we purchased a carpet cleaner for quick clean up and it didn't work nearly as well as the type you rent. I leave it to the professional but only use the big companies. We used one of those small companies once and it was a joke. They showed up in a little hatchback car that was falling apart. They used my water to fill up their tanks and tried to WAY overcharge me.

Maybe I'm the only one but I get grossed out with the thought of a carpet cleaner that's cleaned other people's floors. We bought a Bissell ProHeat a few years ago. It was about $300. I just like knowing the only dirty floors it's touched are ours and we can pull it out whenever we need it---like those middle of the night throw up accidents:hurl: Oh, and we also don't have a pet (yet!) and we take our shoes off in the house.

We've done both and the carpets looked soooo much better after they were professionally done than they did the time I did it.
