Everybody has a different idea of what works best.
For us, we both work out of the home, so we crate trained during the day and overnight. The dog would be out with us when we were home and taken out frequently, but in his kennel when we were gone. We went through several training pats and a few weeks of messes to clean up, but after about 6 weeks, he got better. Dogs don't like to sleep where they poop and they learn quickly.
Some might disagree with this, but if the dog has an accident in the house, NO IN THE KENNEL/CRATE, rub it's nose in it. That will teach them that it's wrong. They will quickly learn that too.
Don't underestimate a dogs knowledge. They learn quick what's right and wrong.
