Have you been having trouble sleeping for a while? Are you dealing with stress? You could go to the dr. and get a prescription sleep aid, but there are a few things you could try first:

Eat a banana in the evening. They contain tryptophan, a natural sleep aid.
Dim the lights in the evening. Bright lights can cause you to stay awake.
Burn a lavendar-scented candle. The scent of lavendar is supposed to help you relax and sleep better.
Try taking a melatonin before bedtime. This is a natural herb that helps promote sleep. It's usually located in the vitamin section of the store. Melatonin is sold in 1 mcg and 3 mcg pills. Try the 1 mcg for a little while. If it doesn't work, move up to the 3 mcg. In my experience, it takes melatonin a few nights to build up in your system before you start sleeping better.
Some people say an antihistamine (like Benedryl) helps them sleep, but it doesn't work for me. Most antihistamines keep me wide awake.

I hope you start sleeping better soon.

I am currently nursing, so I'm not sure what's safe to take.

I've struggled with insomnia at various times in my life -- not sure what's causing it lately. I do have a lot of things to get done (and mommysavers isn't helping ) because I am teaching a college course on the weekends (I am so behind in grading!) and my DH has been really busy at work.

I suffered from Imsomnia last fall/wiinter, and I just took some Tylenol PM, and it didn't seem to do the trick. I never pin-pointed to what it was or go to the DR. but I started taking a nice warm showers before bed time, and drank a warm glass of milk, and I was fine.

I work nights so it is very hard for me to sleep on my nights off. I usually take one or two tylenol pm's early in the evening (like an hour before bed) and that helps me a lot.

I took a warm shower last night, but I also did some reading before turning out the lights --I might try not reading tonight!

I'm treated by a sleep specialist twice a year for YEARS of sleep problems. It's horrible. But anyway, in case you don't know. NO caffeine past about noon. Really...NONE!! No excercising late in the evening, Early morning or afternoons are fine, but late night actually revs you up. Room should be dark and somewhat cool. It is normal to take about 30 minutes to fall asleep, so if you notice you're still awake, don't worry about it. If you start worrying about it (something I do) then it keeps you from relaxing enough to go to sleep. Try not to nap during the day and if you do, no more than about 20 mins. Don't lay in bed and watch TV. HTH
