I kept my boys home due to a threat in our school district. I decided that this would be a perfect day to work on some things that we never seem to have time to because of the very long school day. By 4:00, my boys are tired and want nothing more to do w/ school work. We hurry through homework so that I can get to dinner and it's all pretty unpleasant and I feel guilty for robbing them of their much needed free time.

I decided today would be different. I made up a a few worksheets this morning. The boys did them right after their breakfast. They were excited to do them. I got to sit and help them work through some simple things that have been giving them trouble. After they finished them, I sent them out to play. It's beautiful outside. After I cleared up the dishes, I went outside too. We talked about evaporation while playing in a mud puddle. Then we took the dog for a walk and found the the helicopters from our red maple tree had planted themselves and were growing baby trees in the yard. We talked about that cycle. I let them play by themselves until lunch. I came in and made up a couple more worksheets. One had to do with telling time and the other was to write a sentence or two about their day. They loved it again. My oldest said, "why can't we homeschool everyday, this is great!" My youngest said he would miss his friends, but was having fun today too. They are back out enjoying their day. I told them I would see them at snack time. I will have a little project for them to work on and then somemore playtime. This is the best day I can remember in a long time.

Kelly, we did pretty much the same! I kept my son home from school -- too many violent things are associated with this day and week. Hitlers birthday, Columbine, the VA Tech massacre on Monday and all the ensuing threats... I didn't want some lunatic to even make a 'threat' at my son's school and have him be in lockdown all day and not be able to get him!

I homeschool my 4 yo so we did business as usual (practice his letters, practice reading "_ad" words, doing some phonics, Reading a book using Five in a Row), but I also had my oldest work on some math. When they were finished they each had a playdate (someone came and picked up the 4 yo... he's still at their house) and two boys came over to play with my oldest (they homeschool so they were free right after lunch...)

It was such a nice day!

This really started a good thing for us. Today (SAT) I made up a few more sheets and told the boys if they did really good on them they would get a special treat. They like doing them and are really improving their handwriting and math. I wish there were more time during the week to work on things with them...

I got the Christian Bookstore sale flyer today. They had tons of homeschooling materials in there. My wheels are turning. I would just love to to do this and in some ways my oldest would benefit, but in others he would miss out on all the help he is getting in school. Oh these tug-o-wars I have with myself....
