I am in the process of having some root canal work done. I had a temporary crown that fell off last night. I need to go back to have the last of the root canal stuff done on April 30th. I have a permanent crown waiting for me at my dentists office. Heres the question...

Should I go and have another temp crown made to wear in between now and lets say May 1st? Or should I just wait until the root canal stuff is over on April 30th and make my appt for the perm. crown the next day? Do I really need the temp one?

You should be able to put the temp back in no problem. Mine fell out a few months ago about 2 weeks before my permanent one was ready and they told me to put chapstick in the temp and then push it back in. It works, it forms a suction and it held til I got my permanent just fine.

Well the problem is that I didn't feel it fall off my tooth and I had a potato chip in my mouth so as I crunched the chip I crunch the temp too.

This actually is the problem....should I have another temp made if I will be getting the perm one around May 1st?

I used to work as a dental assistant. If you don't get the temporary, you run the risk of breaking what is left to attach the new permanent crown to. If you don't get the crown replaced, you will need to be very careful not to damage what is left of the tooth structure. Also, they could put a premade temp on it. It would be metal, but it would protect the tooth structure. HTH

Also, the temp keeps the 'place' for the permanent. Your teeth can move just slightly and make it impossible to put the permanent crown in right.

Ughhhh!!

I did wind up having another temp crown made and put on. Half of it just came off. I'll be glad when all this teeth stuff is over with.
