I know this should be in the Military Thread but I am hoping it will be read by more people and inspire others to adopt a soldier.

DH and I "adopted" a soldier yesterday through Operation Military Pride, supporting deployed military members worldwide - we received our soldier information this morning. I read over the long list of things he could use - I have never been so excited to go shopping in my life! The website says we do not have to send everything asked for but I am hoping I will be able to send several packages this year eventually covering everything on his list.

I think this is such a wonderful way to show suypport for our troops. I don't always agree with the politics of our country but I always support the men and women who make it possible for me to live here and express my views.

Has anybody else done this? I highly recommend it!

Thank you so much for doing this! My son has been in Iraq for about 6 weeks now and is starting to get some care packages from family and friends. Our two younger boys' school has adopted Sean and his unit and collected lots of boxes full of stuff to send to them at the end of the month. The unit he volunteered to join has been there since last June and he said they don't really get many packages anymore.

Don't forget the importance of just sending letters. I found the following poem that I sent out to family and friends:

A soldier in Iraq can't see your ribbon,
Or the flag at your front door.
But a letter they hold in their hands,
To them means so much more.

Reminder: You can no longer send packages or letters "To Any Solder" due to security reasons. Everything sent must have a specific soldier's name on it.

I just signed up. I've been wanting to do this, but never knew how to sign up.

There are several organizations, this is the only one out of 3 that I registered for that responded. My kids are excited about this as well - they plan on using their own money to purcase some things for the care packages. DH suggested I advertise on our local Freecycle group for DVD's, music and anything else that is a little pricey. He thinks I will get a good response if I advertise it is for a soldier.... it's worth a try.

We adopted a soldier too back in January and it has been a great experience for our family. The organization we went thru is called Soldier's Angels and it's an awesome group.

THANK YOU for posting this, I've been wanting to do this w/my dd.

A patient at work did this at Xmas time and had so much fun sending silly things such as silly string and water guns!

My cousin received these in Iraq and he would send them back to the Marine Hospital in Bethesda, MD thinking they needed it more than him as some of the wounded there have no family. We are going there this Thanksgiving to celebrate w/them.
