I have the older modle of this one and would love to have this one since now we have carpeted stairs.... but it works great and I use to have a long haired cat that would leave clumps all over the place... and it works GREAT on cat hair. No it just gets all the smashed gold fish off the living room floor but it is a really good vac. Also I grew up with a kirby and I like this one way better and dh's get up with a rainbow vac and he like this on too. Just for a little comparison.

We got ours as a present for our wedding almost 5 years ago. It's a Simplicity. We got it at one of the special vacuum shops here, and I love it still! I think it was 250 or something close to that.

I have a refurbished Kirby that we bought for Christmas last year. We got it on ebay for about $175. I love it! It is self propelled. I was sick of dumping that bagless canister everytime I vacumned! I like that you have so many options with the attachments, including turning it into a shampooer. MIL has one and we use her shampoo attachment.

I have a hoover that I got for a wedding present but I don't like it. I am going to be shopping for one soon so I am glad to read the responses to this. My parents had this rainbow system that they loved but they are pretty expensive.

I only have hard floors so I don't need an upright. I grew up with Kenmore canister vacs and I got one for a present for our wedding almost 8 years ago and I use it everyday sometimes 2 or 3 times. It is pretty maintence free, you just change the bag when it gets full or stinky (like if you vaccumm up dried food it'll start to stink in there). It did come with a Carpet brush attachment (small and large, the small was for stairs I think) but somewhere along the line I lost the small one and the big one I fried vaccuming an area rug we had. I think it was cuz of some cheap rug deodorizer I sprinkled on cuz the attachment stopped working after that. Other than that I'm really happy with it and hope it works forever. Try sears as that is where they carry Kenmore. It's a good brand, actually my washer is Kenmore and that thing is ancient but works great. HTH

I have the Dirt Devil Dual Chamber Reaction. I love it!!! It has everything... for only $160. I did a lot of research before I bought it... I wanted a Dyson so much but was not willing to spend $600 on a vacuum.

Pros to the dirt devil Reaction:
-the chamber has a lid, so when you take it out to empty you don't let any funk into the air. Just push a button over the garbage and it dumps the dirt. My 2yo has yet to figure out how to dump it... with my last one the second he pulled out the chamber I had a huge mess....
-there is a valve on the hose. When your vacuuming with the upright the air doesn't have to travel through the hose, it goes right to the chamber. When you take off the attachements, the valve opens to take suction from the base to the hose. BIG pro to me... really increases suction.
- Washable hepa filter, no replacements
-when locked upright, the brushes don't touch the floor, so you can use the attachments without running down your carpet in spots.
-I once sucked up a large cushined man's sock and it went all the way to the chamber... that's how strong it is.

Cons
- the rotating brush attachment doesn't work too well (but do any??)
-the attachment hose doesn't have a lot of reach. It's kinda stiff. But I can do 1/2 staircase with it.
-the bare floor setting isn't too good.. biggest complaint. It kicks the dirt back at my feet when doing tile.
-When your 2yo finds a way to drop a screw directly into the motor (I think he took off the filter and dropped it in) it will over heat and you will have to take it back to walmart, (without a box or receipt, if your like us) to beg for a replacement. I took it completely apart first, though... the screw totally fried the motor.....I now know exactly how a vacuum works......

I have over 2400 sqft of carpet in my house, 2 kids under 5 and two large, shedding dogs.... so.... if I like a vacuum......

HTH...

We had a (Self-propelled) Hoover Wind Tunnel...but I shed hair like a animal..LOL..so i kept burning up the beater bar. Just recently got the Purple Dyson at Bed, Bath, & Beyond (used a 20 % off coupon and saved $120) and I really like it. I never thought I would want a bagless but I really like it and no more bags to buy! Still have to clean hair off the beater bar but until I shave my head I guess that's life! Ember, You girls aren"t shaving your heads for bootcamp are ya? LOL

I have a simplicity that I bought probably ten years ago ($400.00 ish) and I love it. Nothing I have used picks up like this one. All of the attachments are on the vac and it came with a long hose that I use on my wood floors.

Another vote for the Dyson Animal! We had some sort of Hoover before this, and it lasted just over a year before it quit working. The Dyson is really nice, and you can even vaccuum bare floors with it (like the kitchen).
