We have had a Hoover Windtunnel for almost 10 years and it is a BEAST. We will definitely buy another when this one finally dies. I think they are somewhere between $100 and $300 depending on what model you get, but heck if it lasts at least 10 years...and STILL works great...it is worth the price.

I have one of the less expensive Hoover Windtunnels (not self-propelled - from what I've heard that's only useful if you have large open spaces to vacuum) and it definitely gets the job done.

My parents paid $500 for a Dyson a few years back and my Dad loved it at first (it was all he'd talk about !) but after a year or two he started complaining that it didn't suck up the dirt as well and he went out and bought another Windtunnel! Now the $500 Dyson is his "basement" vacuum.

I have a Dyson. It wasn't $2000 but it wasn't cheap either! I love that it gets everything up. I have a dog, cat and 2 messy kids and it cleans like a champ.

I have had it since November and I use it 2-3 times a week. I have had to cut the long hair off the beater bar on the bottom, but I also had to do that with my other vacs.

With the holidays coming you could ask for gift cards for Christmas to where ever you would like to purchase a vac from to help defray the costs.

I have the Dyson DC14 Animal (the beefed-up purple one) and I love it. With everything you need on board, easy to see and dump the stuff you suck up, etc. I just love it!

I have an upright Electrolux which I absolutely LOVE!!! I got it last year for $620. I used to have a Hoover Windtunnel which I got in 1998. The suction in it died and let me tell you the Electrolux runs circles around the Hoover!! It was worth the money!!

We bought a refurbished Hoover at Sears about 6 years ago for $75 bucks. It came with a 3 year warranty and then we could buy each additional year for $40/ year. That covers cleaning, repairs- they even replaced the electrical socket when I yanked it out of the wall wrong. Mines just a cannister vac, but does great and I've yet to have problems !
