Last week we looked at a used Honda Element but it smelled like smoke, big time so we passed. We found a great deal on a certified used Element at a dealer 200 miles away, we called and asked them if there was anything we would be surprised about when we saw it, specifically, the smoke scent. No, it's perfect they assured us. We drove out there with the babies and test drove it, noticed the smell of cleaners so thought all was well. Our salesman turned out to be a flake but we ended up buying the car anyways. We are slowly finding out that the car has an underlying scent of smoke, they must have sprayed something in it before we looked at it because the smoke smell is stronger everyday and the "clean" smell is non-existent now. DH is talking to the dealership but I was wondering if anyone had any tried and true tips on removing the smoke smell besides "airing it out." TIA mamas!

There is an air freshener, Oust may be the maker. It has citrus in it and it's made specifically for getting the smell of smoke out of a car or home. HTH

Super, thanks! I will try the Oust if the dealership screws us over again!

I think it was blessed w/ 6 that recommended the little charcoal bags I think you can find in the pet dept at walmart, I know a couple gals on here have mentioned they used them and they worked well.

I found an air freshener/odor absorber at the grocery store that has charcoal and citrus in it and it worked really well, it's in a maybe 5" round, 2" tall container, has a sticker on the top, you just peel the sticker off and the container has holes in it and you can just set it wherever, it lasted a few months. I know, that's a horrible description, but I can't remember anything close to the brand name of it! I'll check next time I'm at the store and see what it is. I used it in the basement at our old house to get rid of the smoky smell from the wood stove. The charcoal absorbs the odor and the citrus smells good!
