I talked to the manufacturer of our dishwasher and they highly recommend a rinse aid. But it is an extra expense I would prefer not to have.

Any suggestions on something low cost you can use in place of the jet dry?

It is a new washer so I want to make it work the best possible and since they recommend it I want to use it - esp if it helps.

thanks.

My MIL said the repaiman told her that jet dry was not that good, better to run it once in a while with vinegar. (seems vinegar is good for everything LOL )

Do you have a water softener? Do you need one?

For years I used the liquid Jet Dry or equiv. I'm having problems with it leaking (although they replaced that unit before) so switched to the solid one that clips on. It lasts a lot longer and I see no performance difference.

I never use jet dry either. Used to use vinegar - when I remembered. Now I get the Electrosol Gel Pacs -- they work great. No grit or gunk on the dishes (as I found some detergents leave) and everything comes out clean.

we don't have a water softner and I don't think we need one. Our city water is good enough for me.

You know the only glass we use is the plates, all of our cups are plastic, so maybe I won't worry about it. Or once the jet dry is gone switch to vinegar.

Thanks for the tips ladies.

Vinegar can etch your glassware. It's OK for occasional use, but it IS acidic, and soft water makes it worse.

By the way, I have soft water and still have spots. They just don't make dishwashers clean the way they used to, and they will admit that - they blame all the EPA restrictions and you not having your water hot enough or overusing or underusing detergent. Everything but the fact that their machines just don't do the job.

In our old house we had a water softener and I found we had a lot of etching on our glasses, as I later found out what it was exactly. I read to use a lot less detergent if we had soft water so I cut way back and it solved the problem. I have Jet Dry in ours now only because a bottle came with the dishwasher when we bought it. I love the Electrosol gel packs too! I got 2 boxes for like .40 a few months ago when they had the $2.25 off coupon in the Sunday paper.
