I will be going back to work after both kids start school in Aug. So in 3-4 mths we are looking to buy a new or used auto. Here are my top 3 so far. I'm going for looks and good gas mileage. I'd like to hear from anyone who owns one of the three. I've read reviews but firsthand experince would be great.

Nissan Altima
Pontiac G6
Dodge Caliber

we almost bought a nissan but we didn't because we read the consumer reports on them and didn't like the reviews.

if you have your heart set on those cars, nissans are the best. According to Consumer Reports - they are the more reliable. However, I advocate to anyone who doesn't want to be repairing their car forever to get a Toyota we had ours for 15 years and finally it needed a new engine at 215K. our subaru is great too...but toyota corollas are cheaper, and better MPG. (45 mpg for the new ones)

Good luck!!

Be careful of newer Nissans - they're not as reliable as the older ones. *Nissan quality isn't what it used to be. *I haven't read any reviews on the Altima, but I've read several on the Sentra and they were not very good. Edmunds.com is a great place to go to read consumer reviews. *Also, I have a friend who has a new Nissan Pathfinder, and the entire electrical system went out after she had it for two months. *It was repaired under warranty, but my friend is now very nervous about this vehicle.

JMO, but Nissans are more expensive to repair and insure. *Any time a little sensor goes out, we're looking at a $500 repair bill. *The insurance on our 10 y/o battered Nissan truck is only a few bucks cheaper (and I'm talking only $5-$10 cheaper)than my newer Saturn.

I wouldn't own a Dodge product if my life depended on it.

I haven't read any reviews on the Pontiac G6, but of all the American cars I've owned, I've done pretty well with General Motors' products. *Plus, GM is hurting bad financially, so you could probably get a great deal on a G6. *I'm assuming this has a 6 cyl. engine, and GM does well with these types of engines. *Of the three choices, this would be my pick.

Have fun car shopping!

My husband just bought a Pontiac G6. He loves it. It's fun to drive and very sporty looking. Unfortunately the gas mileage isn't the best. Hope this helps!

Well, my mom's been looking at the Caliber. News from her dealer in NY and my dealer down here is that it's not the tops from a comfort angle, but it's worth looking at from a gas mileage angle.

I got to poke around inside the Caliber. It's not bad looking inside or out; it's a very clean design, and the "extras" are kind of nice. But it's not my style of car as I found the overall interior design a bit spartan for my taste.

That having been said, I'm also not too keen on buying the first model year of any car.

I detest GM products with few exceptions (I would buy another Saturn), so I can't help with the Pontiac. People I know who own Nissans generally have seemed pleased with their purchase. Good luck shopping!

What kind of mileage is he getting as that is very important to me with gas as high as it is. It is a great looking car and has lots of leg room in the back seat.

How is the gas mileage on short and long trips? I think this is a gorgeous car!

Thanks for reminding me one more thing to add to my comparisons. Repair costs will be very important!
