I would call your provider, or walk in to one of their stores and ask them to explain your plan. We have Nextell because of the walkie talkie button. We have unlimited long distance, and we are charged a flat rate per minute if we go over our "anytime" minutes. We have 300 of those a month. Nights after 9 pm are free, and so are weekends. ALL incoming calls are free, and so are calls in our "network". (nextel to nextel), we also have unlimited walkie talkie for free. (you can turn off the speaker for private conversations) My bill runs about $55 a month.
As far as the land line, we switched to Vonage. Basically, they send you a modem to hook to your computer and all of your phone calls run though your cable line (must have cable internet or DSL). The phone itself is just a regular house phone, you just plug the line into the modem instead of the house jack. It has free voice mail, and you can make unlimited calls all over USA, Canada, and Europe for $30 a month after tax. Incoming and outgoing, as many as you want, whenever, for as long as you want. You can go online and see who called you, and who you called (good for teenagers who are grounded, haha).
A couple catches with Vonage, since your computer runs the line, you must have electricity and internet service to run. HOWEVER, you can use the back up line feature (also free) and have it ring to an alternate number if the modem isn't working due to internet problems or power failure.
I can go on and on about Vonage. That might help you save money on your land line so you can have it in the home. Good to do if kids are there, or if cell battery dies.
