Question I have a dumb 'cell phone' question

We have a cell phone which we use just for emergencies ~ you know .. "Ice cream is on sale honey, do you want Cookie Dough or Oreo?"

We are seriously thinking about getting rid of our land line and going with only the cell. Why pay two bills when I do 90% of my talking online (I'm not really a phone person).

The question is this. I know the rate for calls going out. There is one rate for local and another for long distance. How about for calls coming in? Is it the same as the local rate either way or if I am getting a call from someone long distance will I pay the long distance rate even if I'm not the one to make the call?

I feel silly asking. But I really can't find the answer.

I honestly think it all depends on your cell phone company. We have Verizon and we get 500 minutes free besides those in our network (after that I don't know the rate- I hear it is costly though!). To be perfectly honest, I enjoy having both land line and cell phone- I only give my cell phone to specific people and mainly call only those in my network. I would have a fear of never being able to "get away"with using just my cell phone as a form of contact to be perfectly honest- but I know many people who only use their cell phone as their only line.

With most cell phone companies you get X amount of minutes a month, that includes incoming and outgoing. I know that there are a couple of cell phone companies that have a freeincoming plan or nation wide long distance included. I would go onto the website of you cell phone provider and look at all there rate plans. You may be able to find a plan that better suits what you need for you and your family. I would do that before cancelling your land line.

I would call your provider, or walk in to one of their stores and ask them to explain your plan. We have Nextell because of the walkie talkie button. We have unlimited long distance, and we are charged a flat rate per minute if we go over our "anytime" minutes. We have 300 of those a month. Nights after 9 pm are free, and so are weekends. ALL incoming calls are free, and so are calls in our "network". (nextel to nextel), we also have unlimited walkie talkie for free. (you can turn off the speaker for private conversations) My bill runs about $55 a month.

As far as the land line, we switched to Vonage. Basically, they send you a modem to hook to your computer and all of your phone calls run though your cable line (must have cable internet or DSL). The phone itself is just a regular house phone, you just plug the line into the modem instead of the house jack. It has free voice mail, and you can make unlimited calls all over USA, Canada, and Europe for $30 a month after tax. Incoming and outgoing, as many as you want, whenever, for as long as you want. You can go online and see who called you, and who you called (good for teenagers who are grounded, haha).

A couple catches with Vonage, since your computer runs the line, you must have electricity and internet service to run. HOWEVER, you can use the back up line feature (also free) and have it ring to an alternate number if the modem isn't working due to internet problems or power failure.

I can go on and on about Vonage. That might help you save money on your land line so you can have it in the home. Good to do if kids are there, or if cell battery dies.

I agree; ck w/your provider. I have a certain amt. of minutes allowed, and it doesn't matter if the calls are long distance or local, in or out - 'tis all the same.
