My DD's have been wanting a pet for a while now and I don't want an inside pet - unless it's fish LOL! So, we decided on bunnies. DH and BIL built a bunny pen Sunday and we are supposed to pick them up tonight. The people guarantee us that they are both girls. I'm wondering how do you tell? Can you tell? A lot of people have been telling me that they had bunnies and though they were both girls or both boys and ended up with a HUGE family. I don't want to be in the bunny making business.

I raise bunnies as a child to show in 4-H. Yes you can tell and yes it is easy to tell. However the bunnies need to be 4-6 months before it's obvious..

The proper way to pick up a bunny is to hold the ears down and grab the extra fur at the back of the head. Flip it over so the tummy side is up. Nessle the head in your elbow, underarm area. (you should train them, work with them so that it's natural for them) Then with your free hand gently seperate the genital area.. Is you just see folds of skin it's a girl. If something sticks out at you, it's a boy..

If you think for any reason that the 2 don't look alike have your hubby put a piece of chicken wire or a board deviding the hutch.

The more you get them out and allow the kids to handle them the better the bunnies will be.

To cool them, freeze water bottles and put in the hutch for them to lay next to. also ice cubes in the water dish.

If you have any questions I would be glad to help. Also check your area for a 4-H Rabbit Club. You have to be 9 minimum to show, but they will help anwser any questions. Also our Michigan State Extension office helps with stuff like that.

Good luck. Rabbits are easy to care for and leave little mess behind. You can put the "blueberries" in your flower beds to fertalize..

How exciting. Please post pictures. We miss our rabbit, Rudy. She was the BEST!!!! She was litter box trained and she loved to sit with us and watch tv. She would play with my dd all of the time. She died the day after my dd's 7th birthday. We got her when my dd was 2. We hope to get another one when my dd is ready. It has been three years, but she still misses her terribly.

Enjoy your bunnies and give them lots of bunny hugs!!!

I'll post pictures as soon as I figure out how to load my pics on my PC from my camera. LOL I'm not too swift with it.

They are sooooo cute! They are Rex bunnies and they are like velvet -- so soft!! Megan named her bunny Buttercup Rose and Abby named her bunny Flopsy. They are both grey and when you pet them you can see a light brown in them too. The girls were a little scared of them at first -- they aren't used to being around animals. By the time we were ready to put them in the pen they were petting them and Megan held hers. When I left for work this morning they were both standing at the door waiting for Grandma to take them out. LOL It will be a long day for Grandma outside.

Tell Grandma to pull up a lawn chair and bring a glass of tea with her

Is your yard fenced in? If not start looking for those baby yards at garage sales. you can put the girls and the bunnies in and don't have to worry about them.

Have you bought rabbit pellets yet? you can also pick up salt blocks there. And crocks work great because the bunnies can't tip them over.

I hope they are all adjusting, even mom
