I am hoping to hit one garage sale this weekend because the ad says 2 twin beds for sale. that is just what I need for the boys bedroom. Thing is, I dont know how to barter for furniture at a garage sale. I have never bought furniture at a garage sale before. I would be willing to spend a little more if the bed frames are included since I am told that those are expensive to buy new. I will want both of them if they are in good shape, so i would think that I could perhaps get them for a better deal than if i was buying only one. If the mattresses happen to come with them, I dont want them as I would rather buy those brand new. Do I take off (in my head to make an offer) so much for each scratch/dent. I could do some sanding/staining myself if need be. What are your tips for buying furniture??

Check the price she is asking and then say if I buy them both would you... Then either say Take less for them. Or say take *$ amt here* for both.

Usually if you are going to buy both then they will be willing to take some $ off them.

I don't know, if you have the time and energy I think you can find used furniture pretty cheap. Have you checked out Craigslist? They have A LOT of furniture on there. People get rid of stuff really cheap all the time because people aren't always willing to pay a lot for it or just because they don't have the time to wait for it to sell (moving soon or whatever). I know I just tried to sell a King sized bed for a couple of days- a few calls in a couple of days but no one even came by to look- and then we ended up just giving it away because we are leaving and don't want to have to move it. Check some sites and just look under the free section, you never know what you might find

But if you really want the garage sale ones, just offer what you want. You can always leave your number with the sellers in case they don't sell and they can call you when the garage sale is over. GOOK LUCK!

I have checked the internet-craigslist, ebay, etc for months and not had any luck. I do not have to buy at a garage sale, but the only thing I have found that will work is at Walmart. I found a set of wood bunk beds that convert into two seperate beds. That will cost $180.00 plus tax and than I still have to buy a mattress as I already have one. I just thought surely I can get a lot better deal at a garage sale than Walmart. I dont really have $180 to spend on anything right now. And since Walmart doesnt have layaway anymore, I dont know what else to do.
Good idea to give them my phone number if they dont like my offer.

Are you asking how to haggle?

Bartering means trading...

Are you going to offer something in trade instead of paying cash?

In my area, most people having a garage sale are very receptive to negotiating their prices. As a matter of fact, it is usually expected. I was kind of embarrased at first to ask for a better deal, but once you do it a few times it gets easier. There are a few things to remember...

-People having garage/yard sales are usually trying to get rid of stuff they don't need or don't have room for anymore. Use this to your advantage, large items especially are a pain to bring back in at the end of the day.

-Ask things like "Is this the best you can do?" or "Would you take $xx.xx for this?" or "What is the best price you can give me on this?" or "If I buy both of these will you make me a better deal?"

-If you don't want the mattress sets then mention it. They might cut the price and sell them seperately or you could offer to take them anyway and dispose of them for them if they give you a better deal.

-Don't offend the person with a ridiculous offer. For instance, don't offer $5 on something marked $100.

Remember...the worst thing that can happen is that they can say no.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Most of the time, things at garage sales (like furniture) go pretty quickly if it's in good shape. So, in my opinion...

Show up right when it starts and see what they are priced at. Usually people won't go down on price right away if they know they can sell it for that amount- because they just think..."Someone else will pay me what I want, and the sale just started, so no, I won't go down on price" You can always ask them if they will, you never know, you may get lucky. But- like I said...at least around here stuff like that goes right away and for what they are asking for it. If it's towards the end of the sale and it's still around, people seem to go down on their prices.
