I want to get a pet Rat, I have had just about every animal you can have as a pet, including a Skunk! I hear that Rats make very good pets for kids, they will come to you when called and are as smart as dogs.. I just read an artical in Wonder magazine about them. It was all very positive, they are NOT like the wild street Rats, they are domesticated, bred for pets..
Anyone have any thoughts on this???
Besides, Every Witch needs a Rat!!!

Nope, no experience here. The vet I work for takes care of a few rats. The vet tech said that sometimes they are boarded, but they have not been boarded since I began working there. I think there's a pet (at least one!) for everyone, so if you are interested in a rat, then go for it. I would make sure you got a healthy one. Does petfinder.org list any rats? Are there reputable breeders? I would imagine like any other domesticated animal, there are good breeders as well as bad. Do you have a vet lined up that will take care of a rat? I would imagine that most vets would be able to care for a rat, but I would want to know before I brought a rat home.
Good luck to you! Let us know what you find out. I'm anxious to hear the process in getting a rat!

I have a good vet, she sent me a sympathy card when my Hampster died, I had him for 5 years, which is A long time for a hampster! He went everywhere in my sons pocket! And he LOVED captain crunch cerial!!! And spegetti! Too funny...
I would get my rat at the pet store down the street from me.They do their own breeding right there so you know the animals are NOT mis treated, and they all get Vet checked before they are put for sale.

I haven't, but have heard that they are wonderful pets. I wouldn't be opposed to getting one if the kids brought up the idea. My dh on the other hand, might take a little more convincing.
There are a couple of people on my veggie board that have them and love them lots!

I grew up having pet rats!! they are great!! I even had one that would lay right by me and nap while I did my homework!! and my brother had one that would get out of its cage and curl up with him!! I even had one when I first got my cat (15yrs ago) and my cat would curl up on its cage!! dh would not let me keep the rat ! he is dead set against me getting any small pets like rats, hamsters etc! (I dont gget ip but oh well)
anyhow they do make GREAT pets!!!!

We do not own rats, but good friends of ours do! They LOVE them! Yes, they do make good pets- they bite less than other rodant pets and they are very friendly and they love to cuddle and play. Just make sure you go to a good pet store to get them. I heard that one "shady" store with in an hour of us was selling non-domesticated rodents- They ended up getting shut down...Even though I, myself, would never get one- I know that they make good pets.

How did you guys deal with the loose poop? DS has a hamster and that thing poops and pees constantly! I don't allow him to put him in his pockets or even run around on him. We put it in the ball on the floor, and it still poops and pees thru the ball - I have to disinfect the floor (and ball) afterward. Ick!

That's funny. How? W/our hamster, still a baby, I put a special dish in the corner of the cage and he put bedding in it - he does pee and poop there, but also does it everywhere else. How do you train a hamster in that way?
