O.K. I have a question. My girlfriend gave me the start of this stuff. Do you know what i am talking about? It's the stuff in a bag that you squeeze the bag on certain days and add stuff to it on certain days and it sits and ferments. On the 10th day is when you add more stuff, take out 4 starters and put in bags, and then hand out to friends. Anyway, here's my question.......do you think I could freeze this dough stuff? It has to have yeast in it, but not sure if I can freeze the starter stuff and take it out of the freezer later. I don't want to lose the starter, but I kept all 4 bags this time and will bake up 32 little min-loaves next week to put in the freezer. The kids LOVED it, and so did I.

HELP!

I think if you freeze it you'll kill it. Try just adding half the amount of stuff to "feed" it so you don't end up with quite as much starter. Dh's cousin just sent me a recipe to make my own starter for Amish Friendship Bread, so I'm excited to try it out. I've been reading about starters quite a bit lately though, and they usually recommend to keep them at room temp (sometimes you can keep them in the fridge, but it slows the growth quite a bit). Good luck!!

I agree, I wouldn't freeze it. I love that bread! I haven't had it in quite awhile. Does anyone have a starter recipe they would share?

I found this link with a little more information: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/baking_joy/85474 It looks like this person does freeze her starter with very good results.

Here's the link dh's cousin sent me: http://breadnet.net/friendship.html Also, if you search under Amish Friendship Bread/Variations, you'll find lots of ideas and recipes.

You ladies are awesome! I knew I could count on you to get me what I needed. I am so excited becasue now I can do the starter myself whenever I want and don't have to worry about freezing it. I love this bread, but don't want to get sick of it!

Thanks!:happy dance:

I am so glad that the starter can be frozen. I got a starter a few months ago and got tired of having so much, I gave what I could away. The guys at my DH work didn't mind the bread, but I got tired of baking all the time. Now I can start back up, that bread was good!!

I love Amish bread. I got a starter last year, when I was on the 3rd round of bread I didn't give the new starts away and couldn't make that much bread in one day. I will have to make me some new starts and get it going with our neighbors again.
Do you use the recipe that takes Chocolate pudding? It is so yummy. That's what kind my girls like!
I think my mom did freeze her starts. She pulls one out it would start on day 1 or 2.
