He started kindergarten today and he was so excited about it. He loved his pre-k last year and I think he might have thought it would be kind of the same. His pre-k class had only 10 kids in it and he made friends quickly. Well, he came home today and he didn't really want to talk about the day much. He mentioned his Spanish class and writing class, but that was it. It turns out that he tried to meet new people, but they were more interested in other kids in the class. He played by himself at recess (they have 2), although he said that everyone played by themselves, except two little boys who played together. He sat at lunch and tried to talk to other kids, but he said they only wanted to talk to each other, so he didn't talk to anyone at lunch. In his pre-k class, he was fairly popular (as much as you can be in a 10 person class), and the teacher said that all of the kids always wanted to be around him. I hope that it was just today and that some of the other kids were shy and since this was a new experience for them, they weren't quite ready to make friends, yet. He was so sad when he talked about it, DH and I just couldn't make him keep talking about it. We tried our best to encourage him and let him know that maybe the kids are shy and they will be ready to make friends tomorrow. I hope we're right. ray: It is breaking my heart.

ETA: He is 4, and will be 5 next week, so he is probably the youngest in his class. If this year ends up being a huge disappointment or something, we do have the option of having him go to kindergarten next year.

That is so hard to hear about when your son is not feeling like he's fitting in. I'm sure tomorrow will be better. Good luck!

When my kids first went to school, I asked the teacher (wrote a note to the teacher) asking for a list of first names in the class......I was then able to seem like I knew the kids and ask "did you play with Steve today?" "What did Joey play with today?" "Where does Suzy sit?"

How sad! I think tomorrow will be a better day for him! The first day is always so tough on kids- hopefully a few tomorrow will be more outgoing and talk to him some! Definatley tell him that he should still try to be outgoing and make more friends- that way when the ones who are still shy will notice how nice he is and will go to him to be their friends!

That is just heartbreaking for a mom to hear. I hope it is just first day jitters. Your DS might just be more social then the rest of his peers. They might be too shy to come out of their shells on the first day.

I would just tell you little guy how special he is and that he has a gift of friendship that he is wanting to share, but that the other kids might be a little scared or a little too shy at first. It sounds like he is very friendly and outgoing and I would hate for him to shrink away from that.

This just breaks my heart! I'm sorry.

I am so sorry. Maybe the week will get better once he gets used to everyone & they get use to each other.
