This will be dd's 1st year in Brownies. Our Brownie troop goes 1st thru 3rd grade. My question is on whether or not I should buy a new uniform or pick a used one from ebay. Dd has meetings every Monday (except the 1st Monday) and she will be doing this for 3 years. I also have a younger dd who will inherit dd's uniform and wear it for 3 years. Should I just buy new? I'm just afraid that a used one will end up looking like a rag by the time dd2 gets it.

My ds is starting his 3rd year with his cub scout uniform & it is starting to fade. I wash the uniforms after each meeting.

I have been apart of Girl Scouts for 7 years now. I have never bought my girls the uniform. It is not a requirement for our unit,(Boy Scouts on the other hand is) but if you are going to be passing it on to both of your daughters and that will be 6 years worth of wearing it I would go with new.

i would find out from the troop leader what exactly u need - some troops want full uniform and others only want the vest or sash . my daughters troop for the most part only needed the vest but then her last 2 years she went to a different troop and they wanted them all to have light blue tshirts - they didnt care about what pants.

My dd's former Brownie troop only required the vest and some patches. Honestly, I don't even know why then even required the vest -- they rarely ever wore the thing. I guess we needed something to slap those patches on.

I'm surprised that a troop would require a full uniform. I thought one of the goals of the Girl Scouts was to keep it affordable for everyone.

I am a Girl Scout leader, have been for many years. I would call your local council or your leader and see what they have to say. There are major changes coming to the GS organization starting with the next school year. Uniforms will be changing as will uniform requirements. I know what my council is telling us but your council may be different or less strict than mine.

In all of my troops, and I started with the Daisy level and am now at the Junior level, our girls have always purchased the vest or sash. This was their choice, not my rule. Rarely did a girl ever purchase more than the vest. Some ordered them from the council and some bought them on ebay or from Goodwill, etc. I know with our vests, the girls earned so many patches and badges, there was no way a younger sibling could have used them.

I hope your DD enjoys Brownies.

We too have done the sash or vest. I wasn't thinking about that I was thinking of the actual clothing that they have out. Good luck with your decision.

I don't know anything about girl scouts, but I would say buy used, because what if one or both of the girls do not like it. You can always buy another if they both like it and want to continue.

I never had to wear mine when I was a kid, but that was eons ago. I'd say call the leader and decide from there.

Thanks for all the replies. In our troop the uniform is not required. I think about 1/2 wear and the other half just wear the vest, a brownie shirt and any kind of bottoms. My dd (6) really wanted the uniform. TayJar, I didn't know they were going to make uniform changes, I'll have to give the council a call. Yesterday, I went out and bought the skort, blue blouse, vest and tie. I also got a 10% discount on everything for also buying the books, trefoil pin, tab, flag patch, etc. I got everything a little big so she will have some growing room. If they are making changes then I will probably return what they are changing.

I was a Girl Scout for 8 years when I was a child and we did the full uniform (including the beanie), except we did sashes instead of vests (that was back in the 70s and early 80s). I loved wearing the uniform---it made me feel 'official' but then again maybe I was a weird kid??!
